Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Luau Review: The Best Luau Food on the Big Island (With Two Honest Caveats)

The Mauna Kea Luau is the premium luau on the Big Island, and the food earns it — we caught the chef pulling herbs from the hotel garden before dinner. Private point setting, an MC who can really sing, and manta rays on the way out. Two drawbacks worth knowing before you book.

Activity Overview

  • Departs From: Big Island – Waikoloa and Kohala Coast
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Price: $256
  • Included in the price: Complimentary drink, buffet dinner, live band, hula and Polynesian show, fire-knife dancing

The Mauna Kea Luau is the Big Island’s premium luau, and it’s priced like it. We went in wondering whether the extra cost was justified, and on the food alone, it is. We attended this luau in August, 2026.

We caught the chef picking herbs and peppers from the hotel’s garden an hour before dinner, and it showed on the plate.

The setting is very private, on Manta Point under the monkeypod, kiawe, and banyan trees at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The MC was a phenomenal singer, and the performers put on a great show.

The night ended perfectly as we watched five manta rays from the hotel’s viewing deck just outside of the luau area.

It’s not perfect — there’s a cash bar, and the arrival instructions cost us an hour standing in line — but it’s the luau we’d send you to if you’re staying on the Kohala Coast. Let’s get into the details on the Mauna Kea Luau!

Mauna Kea Luau: General vs. Premium Seating

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel has run its luau since the hotel opened in 1965, making it one of the longest-running luaus on the island. It’s held on a private point above Kaunaʻoa Bay, tucked under the trees, with the sunset directly in front of you.

General Seating

  • Rectangular tables that face the stage — more on why that matters below
  • Welcome mai tai on arrival
  • Full buffet, imu ceremony, and show
  • This is what we booked.

Premium Seating

  • Tables closest to the stage
  • Shell lei on arrival
  • First call to the buffet line

Honestly, given how intimate the setting is, we didn’t feel we missed anything in General. Premium is worth it if you want to be first to the food or you’re marking an occasion.

The Polynesian show had an incredible group of performers. This shot was taken while standing in the back of the seating area.

The Lu’au Schedule

  • 4:45 PM: Doors open. Welcome mai tai, live Hawaiian music, and the imu ceremony. This is the sunset window.
  • Dinner: Buffet opens after the imu is unearthed
  • Show: Follows dinner, closing with the fire knife finale
  • 8:00 PM: Wraps up

Arrival tip: We were told to arrive an hour early. We did, and so did everyone else; we all stood in line for about 45 minutes until the doors opened. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the listed start time, not an hour. Waiting so long soured the start of our night.

Confirm the arrival time in your confirmation email! It is assigned seating, so arriving early didn’t make a difference.

Professional Photographs are available at check-in. You get the beautiful Mauna Kea Beach for a background.

We arrived a bit early, so we were in the front of the line. By the time check-in started, all guests were lined up waiting to get in.

Our Experience at the Mauna Kea Luau

We’ve been to enough luaus across the islands to have a mental ranking, and this one moved straight to the top of our Big Island list, with a couple of asterisks.

[EMBED: new video is coming soon!]

The reasons we recommend the Mauna Kea Luau are the following:

  • The food is the best we’ve had at any luau in Hawaii. That’s not a small claim, and we’re confident because we saw the chef in the hotel’s garden collecting herbs and peppers for that night’s menu. Most luau buffets are catering-scale food that happens to be Hawaiian. This one tasted like a restaurant. The chef was working the grill in the buffet area. The poke and shrimp were fresh. The kalua pig really came from the imu (not all luaus have a permit to do this). It really didn’t feel like a buffet.
  • The setting is private. The luau grounds sit on the point under the trees, away from the pool and the beach. The luau is on the ocean. At a lot of resort luaus, you’re right in the mix, with resort guests wandering past and taking photos. Here it’s just the people who paid to be there, and the sunset happens right behind the stage, between the trees.
  • Rectangular tables that face the stage. This sounds minor until you’ve spent a luau twisted sideways in a round-table chair. Here everyone faces forward. Nobody has their back to the show.
  • The show is genuinely different. Most luaus run the same Tahiti-to-Samoa journey. This one weaves in hapa haole music — the mid-century Hawaiian-English style — and a World War II chapter, which reflects the era this coast and this hotel come from. It made the show feel specific to the Big Island rather than interchangeable with one on Maui.
  • The MC is an excellent singer. She carried the Hawaiian songs. She also provided the historical narrative of the islands, providing a lot of culture.
  • Table service for drinks. While we were not fans of the cash bar, it was nice to have table service for drinks, pupus, and other requests.
  • Manta rays on the way out. Mauna Kea has a famous manta viewing point where lights on the water draw them in at night. We stopped on the walk back and counted five. It’s a free bonus, and for anyone who isn’t up for a manta ray night snorkel, it’s the best shore viewing on the island.

The drawbacks of the Mauna Kea Luau

We want to be straight with you on two things on the Mauna Kea Luau.

It’s a cash bar after the welcome mai tai. At this price, that stings — the Waikoloa Marriott luau is cheaper and runs a full open bar. And the drinks we bought weren’t great. Too sweet, not enough rum. If you’re a cocktail person, have one at the Copper Bar before you walk over and don’t expect much from the luau bar.

The arrival timing. As above — we were told an hour early, and it was an hour in line. It didn’t ruin the evening, but it’s a poor first impression at a premium price, and you can avoid it if you know. Make sure to check the arrival time. No need to arrive early.

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Luau seating
Rectangular table seating is a brilliant way to seat a luau. Everyone can watch the show without flipping their chairs.

Every seat faces the stage. Our General Seating table was the second row of tables.

The Food

This is what you’re paying for, so here’s what to expect.

The buffet runs the traditional lineup: kalua pig from the imu, laulau, lomi lomi salmon, poi, island fish. All that is alongside a table of seafood: ahi poke, sashimi, smoked fish, shrimp, and octopus.

There’s island sweet bread, a spread of fresh pineapple and papaya, and desserts that are better than luau desserts usually are.

Erica and I were impressed with the grill in the food area. The chef was grilling up steak and never letting it run out. It was a premium touch on a buffet. Most table service luaus don’t have a grill going.

Mauna Kea Luau food chef picking herbs
This wasn’t stage! The chef was casually picking herbs and peppers in the Mauna Kea garden before the luau opened.

We spotted the chef in the hotel garden an hour before dinner. This is why the food is what it is.

I believe those fresh herbs ended up on the grilled steak entree.

Who This Luau Is For

Book it if: you’re staying at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel or the Westin Hāpuna, or anywhere on the Kohala Coast. It’s the closest luau, the best food, and the most private setting on the island. It’s also the right pick if food is what you care about most at a luau.

Premium Seating

Consider the Waikoloa Marriott instead if you want an open bar, you’re on a tighter budget, or you’re staying in Waikoloa and would rather not drive. Our review of the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Sunset Luau is here!

Staying in Kona? It’s about 40 minutes up the coast. Worth it for the food, but factor in a drive home in the dark. See where to stay on the Big Island if you’re still deciding.

Mauna Kea Luau FAQ

What days is the Mauna Kea luau held?

Tuesdays and Fridays, 4:45 to 8:00 PM. It sells out, especially in winter and around holidays, so book ahead.

How much does the Mauna Kea luau cost?

General seating is $256 for adults and $180 for kids 5–12. Premium seating is $290 and $213 for kids. Children 4 and under are free. Add in taxes. Don’t be fooled by a lower advertised price; it doesn’t include fees.

Is there an open bar?

No. You get a welcome mai tai, and after that it’s a cash bar. If an open bar matters to you, the Waikoloa Marriott luau has one.

Is parking free?

Valet parking at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is complimentary for luau guests. A tip is customary.

Is General seating good enough?

Yes. The grounds are small, and the tables are rectangular and face the stage, so there are no bad seats. Premium gets you closer, a shell lei, and first call at the buffet.

What’s different about the show?

Alongside the usual Polynesian numbers, the Mauna Kea show includes hapa haole music and a World War II segment tied to the hotel’s mid-century roots. The MC is a strong singer and carries those numbers himself. It closes with a fire knife dance.

Can you see manta rays at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel?

Yes. The hotel has a manta ray viewing point where lights on the water attract them after dark. We saw five on our way out of the luau. It’s one of the best free manta viewing spots on the island.

What should I wear?

Aloha attire (the hotel’s words): Aloha shirts, sundresses, nice sandals. It’s an outdoor sunset spot, so bring a light layer for after sunset.

What’s the cancellation policy?

Customers will receive a full refund, less FareHarbor fees, if they cancel at least 24 hours before scheduled seating. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before seating will be charged the full price. Customers will also receive a full refund if the operator cancels due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Call the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel to cancel or inquire about a cancellation. No-shows will be charged the full price.

Is the Mauna Kea Luau Worth It?

If you’re staying on the Kohala Coast and you care about the food, yes. The chef in the garden, the seafood spread, the private location on the point, the MC — it’s a premium luau that mostly earns the premium.

The two things we’d change are the cash bar and the arrival instructions. Neither is a reason to skip it. Both are reasons to read this first.

Compare it to the rest in our best Big Island luaus guide.
