Sea Maui Sunset Cruise: Dinner Sail vs. Cocktail Sail, After Doing Both

We sailed both Sea Maui sunset cruises from Kaʻanapali Beach: the dinner sail and the cocktail sail. Here is the real difference in food, drinks, crowd and price.

A quick note: we’ve included a few affiliate links below. Booking through them costs you nothing extra and sends a small commission our way, which helps us keep writing free Hawaii guides. We only ever link to things we’d recommend to a friend. Mahalo! Read about our affiliate policies here.

Activity Overview

  • Departs From: Maui – Lahaina/Ka’anapali (West)
  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Price: $115
  • Included in the price: Dinner and drinks, including an open bar. Parking validation included

Sea Maui runs two sunset sails a day off Kaʻanapali Beach, and picking between them comes down to one question: do you want dinner, or do you want a drink and a sunset?

Book the Sunset Dinner Cruise ($146.67 adult, 2.5 hours) if you want the evening to be your dinner: a full buffet, a longer sail, and live music on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This is their more popular sunset cruise.

Book the Sunset Cocktail Cruise ($108.02 adult, 2 hours) if you’ve already got a dinner reservation, you’re traveling with a smaller appetite, or you just want the sunset and a Mai Tai for $38 less. Live music Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Both leave from the same stretch of sand on Kaanapali Beach, both include a full open bar, and both are beach-loading, which means you walk into the water and climb stairs to board.

We’ve been out with Sea Maui in 2025, and would send a friend on either one.

Why we love these Kaanapali sunset cruises… You can’t beat the convenience if you’re staying in Ka’anapali or West Maui. Parking is validated! For the dinner cruise, we arrived on Maui, and this was our evening activity to stay awake.

The beach-loading, the crew, the bean bag chairs, the drinks, the food, and the Maui sunset made for a great start to our trip!

Sea Maui Sunset Cruise Video: Our Experience

We had a wonderful time out on this sunset sail! We went out a few hours after we landed on Maui, making for a perfect start to our trip. It also helped us stay awake as we fought off jet lag!

We were staying at the Westin Maui Resort and Spa, so all we had to do was walk to the beach. Check-in is in front of Whalers Village Shopping Center, on the makai (ocean) side. You can’t miss their kiosk and the group hanging around.

Boarding was easy with the beach-loading, as the captain and crew are professionals at it. See below for details on the beach-loading experience.

Once aboard, the crew opened the bar. We sat on the front netting with the bean bag chairs. The kids loved it, and so did we. They also have chairs and benches around the sailing catamaran. Tables are available too to put your plate.

We set off up the West Maui coast. The boat isn’t too large and isn’t too crowded. We all got great sunset pictures with the crew’s help. They also put a fishing line in the water to see if we would catch anything (no luck!).

The boat got back to Ka’anapali Beach after dusk. It was dark when disembarking, but the crew helped us come ashore. We walked to the Westin and got in bed!

Watch our experience in the short video below to know what to expect on Sea Maui’s Sunset Cruise.

We filmed this video on the Sunset Dinner Cruise.

Here is what you can expect with Sea Maui’s Sunset Dinner Cruise or Cocktail Cruise.

What other people say:

We’re one data point, so: Sea Maui holds 4.9 stars across roughly 2,500 Google reviews, and the Premium Sunset Dinner Cruise sits at 4.9 from just over 400 reviews on Tripadvisor.

Sea Maui Premium Sunset Dinner Cruise from Kaʻanapali Beach

You board the 65-foot Sea Maui III off the sand, sail down the West Maui coast for about two and a half hours, and eat a proper sit-down-sized dinner while the sun goes into the water behind Lānaʻi.

What’s Actually on the Buffet

The menu can change, but this is what we ate on our Sunset Dinner Cruise:

  • Grilled salmon with glazed teriyaki sauce
  • Soy-braised short rib with red wine sauce
  • Kung pao chicken
  • Caesar salad with dressing, croutons, and lemon
  • Mixed seasonal vegetables
  • Garlic herb fingerling potatoes
  • Dinner rolls
  • Truffles for dessert

Allergies and Vegetarians

If you have dietary restrictions or food allergies, please note them directly next to the guest’s name when you’re booking online below. Their culinary team can prepare in advance. They need more than 24 hours’ notice to provide an alternate menu for severe gluten-free and vegan options.

sea maui sunset dinner cruise buffett menu
We enjoyed the dinner! The buffet was fresh and delicious. It isn’t as good as a Maui restaurant but it was a premium dinner buffet for a sunset cruise.

The Open Bar

Both sails run the same bar, and it’s genuinely open rather than two-drink-tickets open. Domestic and local beers, High Noon hard seltzers, Chardonnay, LaMarca Prosecco, Redemption Rye, light and dark rum, and Meili vodka. The crew will make Mai Tais, Maui Mules, and most things you’d ask for.

Non-alcoholic: soft drinks, lemonade, POG, water, and coffee. Our kids are big fans of POG – passion orange guava by Meadow Gold on the Big Island.

This tour is best for…

Take the dinner sail if you want a full night out on Maui; you get on the boat at check-in, and you don’t think about food or drinks again. It’s the better value of the two if you’d otherwise be paying for dinner in Kaʻanapali afterward, where $146 goes fast. It’s also the easier one with kids: they eat, there’s room to move, and under-threes are free.

Our kids enjoyed sitting on the bean bags and the netting at the front.

Skip it if you’re a light eater, if you’ve got a dinner reservation you don’t want to move, or if two and a half hours on a boat with a toddler sounds like a lot.

The bartender was always eager to pour a drink! Jordan enjoyed Mai Tais all night and I liked their white wine.

Sea Maui Sunset Cocktail Cruise: the shorter, cheaper sail

Quick difference with the Sunset Dinner Cruise: Same beach, same boat, same bar, thirty minutes shorter and $38.65 less per adult. Instead of a buffet, you get heavy pupus prepared by Chef Jai, and the menu changes day to day as he keeps it fresh!

Every appetizer can be made allergen-free or gluten-free if you note it when you book. Please don’t wait and ask on the boat, as the opportunity has literally sailed

Sunset Live! is on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Twice a week, Sea Maui puts a live musician on the cocktail sail and books it as Sunset Live! for the same price. If you’re choosing a night and the music matters, pick Tuesday or Thursday.

This tour is best for…

Take the cocktail sail if you’ve got dinner booked at Merriman’s or Hula Grill and want the sunset first.

If you’re traveling with teens who eat like adults but are priced like adults on the dinner sail too, $85.28 versus $123.93 is a real gap across a family of four.

Skip it if you’re hungry. Two hours on the water with pupus, an open bar, and no dinner plan afterward is a mistake people make. You don’t want to get off the sunset cruise without a reservation in Ka’anapali!

The sunset sail ends at dusk. Walk off the beach and into lively Whalers Village for more fun in Kaanapali.

Which Sea Maui sunset cruise should you book?

  • Traveling with young kids: dinner sail. They eat, and under-threes sail free.
  • Traveling with teens: cocktail sail. Teens pay $85.28 instead of $123.93.
  • You have a dinner reservation: cocktail sail, and check the return time against your booking.
  • It’s your one big night out: dinner sail on a Wednesday or Saturday, for the live music.
  • You want live music but not dinner: cocktail sail, Tuesday or Thursday.
  • You get seasick: cocktail sail. It’s thirty minutes shorter, and you’re not eating a full meal. Take something an hour before either way.
  • You’re here between mid-December and mid-April: either. Whales are active Dec 15 to Apr 15, and both sails go looking.
  • Someone in your party has trouble walking: neither. Both are beach-loading, and neither is wheelchair accessible. See the next section before you book.
  • Your first night on Maui: dinner sail. We did ours a few hours after landing, and it kept us upright through the jet lag.

What “beach loading” actually means on a Kaʻanapali sunset cruise

There’s no dock at Ka’anapali Beach. Sea Maui brings the catamaran into the shallows off Kaʻanapali Beach, drops a staircase off the front, and you walk out to it.

That’s the whole thing, and it’s the reason these sails leave from the sand rather than from Lahaina or Māʻalaea harbor, which is a genuine advantage if you’re staying in Kaʻanapali and don’t want to drive.

The crew is there to help you along the way! They will organize everyone in a line and have the crew staged along the beach to keep you safe and upright. They know how to time it with the waves.

The biggest risk is hitting your head on the beam as you go up the stairs. You’ve been warned!

kaanapali dinner cruise beach loading example
Here I am with my family during the beach loading on the sunset dinner cruise. The crew is there to help.

What that means in practice:

  • You will get wet to about knee / mid-thigh. Depth depends on the surf that evening.
  • Wear something you can walk into water in. Long dresses, maxi skirts and long trousers are a bad idea. If you can pull them up, that works! But it is nice to have your hands free for the handrails.
  • Sandals or flip-flops. Shoes come off and go into a communal bin for the sail.
  • Anything you carry goes through the water with you: phones, cameras, bags. We held onto ours with one hand.
  • Moderate fitness required. If walking through moving water and up a staircase unaided is a problem, Sea Maui doesn’t recommend the trip, and there’s no wheelchair access. I recommend leaving from Lahaina Harbor or Ma’alaea Harbor with Sail Maui (10% Off!) or a larger boat with Pacific Whale Foundation’s Sunset Dinner Cruise.
  • Pregnancy: no restrictions from Sea Maui, but talk to your doctor first; the boarding is the part to think about, not the sail.

Parking, check-in, what to bring

Where you check in: The Sea Maui kiosk on the Kaʻanapali beach walk at Whalers Village, between Leilani’s and Hula Grill. Not on the sand, just next to the beach. Check in 30 minutes before departure.

Parking: Four hours of free parking in the Whalers Village structure, validated at the kiosk when you check in. Bring the ticket with you to the kiosk; that’s the step people miss.

Departure time: Sunset moves through the year, so departure does too; the booking calendar shows the time for your date. Plan on a late-afternoon start and check when you book rather than trusting a fixed time.

What to bring: A physical ID if you’re drinking, a light jacket or cardigan (it drops noticeably once you’re out on the water), sandals you can walk out of, and seasickness medication taken an hour ahead if you’re prone to it. Gratuity isn’t included in the ticket.

Cancellations:

Guests who have selected TripSafe: If you booked directly with Sea Maui (our booking buttons are direct with Sea Maui) and selected the TripSafe option while booking, you’re all set! You can cancel or reschedule your tour for ANY reason up until check-in time (30 minutes before departure). Simply email info@seamaui.com or call (808) SEA-MAUI no later than 30 minutes before departure, and you will be refunded the full booking amount (less the cost of TripSafe protection and associated booking fees).

Guests without TripSafe protection: Our cancellation policy for those without TripSafe protection is 48 hours before departure. To cancel, refund, or reschedule your tour, please call (808) SEA-MAUI or email info@seamaui.com at least 48 hours in advance.

The crew: Every Sea Maui crew member is a lifeguard and CPR-certified. On a beach-loading boat with a full bar, that’s not a throwaway detail.

Sea Maui Sunset Cruise FAQ

What’s the difference between the dinner cruise and the cocktail cruise?

The dinner cruise is 2.5 hours with a full buffet dinner for $146.67. The cocktail cruise is 2 hours with heavy appetizers for $108.02. Both include the same open bar and both leave from Kaʻanapali Beach. Live music is on Wednesdays and Saturdays on the dinner sail, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the cocktail sail.

Is there a Maui sunset dinner cruise departing from Kaʻanapali Beach?

Yes, Sea Maui’s Premium Sunset Dinner Cruise loads directly off Kaʻanapali Beach rather than from a harbor. We share all Ka’anapali beach-loading tours here: Kaanapali Sunset Cruises Reviewed

Which nights have live music?

Wednesdays and Saturdays on the dinner cruise. Tuesdays and Thursdays on the cocktail cruise, booked as “Sunset Live!”

Is the Sea Maui sunset cruise kid-friendly?

Yes. Both sails are all-ages, and children two and under go free. The dinner cruise is the easier one with young kids because they can have dinner if appetizers aren’t enough. Our kids really enjoyed these tours as they like being on the water, having juice, and the tour is short at 2.5 hours.

Do you actually sail, or motor?

Most of the time they motor. If the sailing conditions are right, they will hoist the sails. When we went, they had the sails up with motoring for assistance.

Can you see whales on a sunset cruise?

Between December 15 and April 15, yes, both sail and watch for humpbacks, and the West Maui channel is one of the better places to see them. Outside that window, no whales will be in the Au’au channel.

Is either cruise adults only?

Neither. Both are all-ages. I’m not aware of any adults-only sunset sails in Kaanapali or on Maui.

What are the restrictions on Sea Maui sunset cruises?

All children, regardless of age, can enjoy the sunset dinner cruise.
As this activity is a beach-loading catamaran, people with mobility issues or who have difficulty walking on their own are not recommended for this kind of trip.
