Just north of Lahaina is Ka’anapali Beach, a long stretch of gold sand. This iconic beach was developed as a resort destination in the 1960s. The north end of the beach is marked by Black Rock, a popular cliff jumping and snorkeling spot, and the remainder of the beach is lined with resorts and vacation rentals.
Ka’anapali Beach Overview
Ka’anapali Beach is probably best known for Black Rock and the resorts that dot the coastline. It’s widest at the northernmost end and progressively narrower as you go south. The wider parts of the shoreline are where you’ll get the most out of your beach day.
The south end of Ka’anapali Beach, in front of the Hyatt Regency, has been plagued with beach erosion. The County of Maui and the resorts have invested in offshore dredging, sandbags, and other measures to maintain the beach. However, large winter storms can wash away the sand.

Who is Ka’anapali Beach Best For?
Ka’anapali Beach stretches for one mile along the coastline and offers a little something for everyone. Snorkelers, swimmers, cliff jumpers, marine life seekers, and beach walkers will have a blast here! If you’re on vacation and looking for Hawaiian green sea turtles, this is a great place to spot them.
Check out our video on Black Rock, which showcases the north end (and widest part) of Ka’anapali Beach. We usually see three turtles right when we enter the water! This video is an oldie but goodie. The beach was relatively empty back in 2020, which gives you a good sense of the land.
Is Ka’anapali Beach Good for Swimming?
Yes, this is an excellent beach for swimming! The waters here are generally calm along the whole stretch of the beach. It can get rougher if you swim out past the cliff jumpers at Black Rock.
It is rare, but there can be a rough shorebreak. It depends on the conditions and the slope of the beach. Always be careful when swimming with a shore break. As this is not a lifeguard beach, use your best judgment. When in doubt, don’t go out!
Is Ka’anapali Beach Good for Snorkeling?
One of the best snorkel spots on Maui is at the north end of Ka’anapali Beach at Black Rock. You’ll find all kinds of fish and be hard-pressed to go without spotting a sea turtle.
If you don’t go past the cliff jumping spot, this can be a nice spot for beginner snorkelers. You won’t have to go far to see marine life.
Go around Black Rock to find a protected cove under the Sheraton for more marine life. However, this area is for advanced snorkelers only, as stronger currents are present. Always swim with a buddy at this location, as you can’t be seen from shore.
Black Rock for snorkeling is no secret, so it will likely get pretty crowded around here. Check ocean conditions before you head out to keep yourself safe.

Know Before You Go Snorkel Safety
Swimming and snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean should not be taken lightly. To keep you safe, please know your health limits, swim with a buddy, never turn your back on the ocean, and read and obey posted signs. Check HIOceanSafety.com for ocean conditions at lifeguard beaches.
How To Get to Ka’anapali Beach
Ka’anapali Beach is about a 45-minute drive from Kahului Airport (in case you’re planning on staying in one of the beach resorts) and just shy of an hour from South Maui. There are several parking areas with beach access trails leading right to the sand.
Ka’anapali Beach Parking
There is limited free beach parking along Kaanapali Beach. The three public lots have 15 to 25 spaces. They can fill up by 9 AM. When they are full, you’ll need to pay for parking (or get it validated) at the Whaler’s Village parking lot.
Erica’s mom took full advantage of this by enjoying the beach and taking her for ice cream in Whaler’s Village. Beach time, ice cream, validated parking, and happy kids… she’s no fool. Be like Erica’s mom.
The validation charge is $30 today, so you may need to do some shopping in addition to having ice cream. The validation price may change, so ask at checkout!
Things to Do at Ka’anapali Beach
In addition to great snorkeling and swimming, Ka’anapali Beach is ideally situated for incredible beach sunsets. It’s also an excellent spot for whale watching from the shore (seasonally). A paved walkway connects all of the Ka’anapali resorts, and Whaler’s Village shopping center sits right around the center of it all.

If you need a break from the sun, head into the Hawai’i Wildlife Discovery Center. It’s free to enter and has a great kids zone to keep your little ones entertained and 30+ exhibits to keep you interested as well!
But I’m not done yet. Several boat tours launch right off the beach; here are all of the Kaanapali Beach tours:

Ka’anapali Beach Safety
The waters at Ka’anapali Beach tend to be pretty calm and only get rough past Black Rock, but no beach is entirely without dangers. There is no lifeguard on duty, so never turn your back on the ocean, and if you are in doubt, don’t go out!
Places to Eat Near Ka’anapali Beach
Whaler’s Village in the center offers restaurants, shopping, and ice cream, so you can make a day of it here. Our favorites are Maui Brew Co. at the Outrigger Beach Resort, Monkeypod Kitchen, Hula Grill, Island Vintage Coffee, and Ono Gelato.

Where to Stay on Kaanapali Beach
Resorts line this stretch of sand, spoiling you for choice. That doesn’t make every hotel the best option, so here are all the hotels on Kaanapali Beach from north to south, plus what we think of them.
- Sheraton Maui: This resort has a good location on the north end of the southern part of the strip. On black rock beach with a great pool and a lazy river. It would be nice if it got a remodel. Explore rooms at the Sheraton Maui.
- Outrigger Kaanapali Beach Resort: The KBR has a great location on Kaanapali Beach, and it’s the most Hawaiian hotel on Maui. Their cultural activities and hula shows are wonderful! They have the Maui Brew Co restaurant onsite with a good happy hour. The pool is small, but the kids enjoy it. Their rooms were remodeled over COVID, but there is still an old tower that can be booked at a steep discount. The gardens around the resort are also nice, and their parking fee is reasonable. Explore rooms at the Kaanapali Beach Resort.
- The Whaler: This vacation rental occupies a prime location, sitting next to Whalers Village and just a quick walk from Black Rock. But it’s not just the location we love. The pool area is the best on the west side and makes for a vacation that both kids and adults can enjoy. Read our complete review of The Whaler here.
- The Westin Maui: This resort is freshly renovated, with a great kids’ pool and a secluded adult pool. Marriott reward points might help you get a free night! It is on the best part of Kaanapali Beach, and it is next to Whalers Village. It is the most expensive of these three, but it is also the most modern and well-maintained. Read our complete review of the Westin here.

- Kaanapali Ali’i Resort: This vacation rental property has a good pool and BBQ area near the beach.
- Marriott Maui Ocean Club: This is a timeshare property with slightly better rates than the Hyatt Vacation Club, and no resort fee! You’ll find guest rooms to two-bedroom units here.
- Hyatt Vacation Club: Another timeshare property, which we haven’t stayed at. This is not an affordable spot, but you can get a one- to three-bedroom unit, so it’s a good place to go if you need to spread out.
- Hyatt Regency: This is our least favorite of the major brand hotels in Kaanapali. That is because it gets busy at the pool (folks save chairs early in the morning), it is dated, and the beach is eroding out front. BUT! Hyatt points are great to use in Hawaii. Also, kids will love the Hyatt for the pool and their seven penguins. Book the Hyatt Regency here.
Visit Ka’anapali Beach and More
You can have a beach day in Ka’anapali or pick one of the resorts and stay a while. We think the Westin is the best of the Ka’anapali resorts, but you can also opt for the Sheraton Maui or Hyatt Regency (which are great options to book on points). Find more options in our Where to Stay directory.
