Maui is our favorite island in Hawaii for snorkeling, and there is nothing more convenient than Kaanapali snorkeling tours. Board from the beach, enjoy the choicest snorkeling spots, and have a Mai Tai on the way back to your resort. It doesn’t get easier than that!
After going on over a dozen snorkeling tours on Maui, here are our reviews on all the snorkeling tours that leave from Kaanapali Beach.
We went out with three of these companies during our visits to Maui, and we plan to go out with more. We are familiar with all the tour companies, having lived on Maui and conducted extensive research.
When comparing these Kaanapali snorkeling tours and tour operators, I recommend you look at the following tour details:
- What type of boat? Catamaran, power boat, or power raft
- What is your preferred group size? 20 to 49 passengers
- What is your level of luxury? BYOB or full-service, premium bar?
After those big decisions, it will be about the details that we share about the experience, tour duration, snorkeling locations, and level of luxury.
While price is a part of the decision, you will find the prices fluctuate fairly with the duration and type of tour. Jump to the yellow box below to make a fast decision on the Kaanapali snorkeling tours for you. If you’re still ironing out the details of your trip, our Kaanapali Guide can answer all your questions!
We love tours that leave from Kaanapali! This list of Kaanapali tours is only for snorkeling. Please go to our Kaanapali Sunset Cruises and Maui Whale Watching Tours for more information.

Quick Tips on Booking a Kaanapali Snokerling Tour
Here is general guidance, based on our experience, for booking a snorkeling tour from Kaanapali.
- Operator cancellation: Though it’s uncommon, a tour company may cancel due to unsafe weather and will notify you via text, email, or a call. You will then have the option to get a refund or to reschedule.
- I recommend booking two to four weeks in advance to get the time and date you want. We have made this mistake! On our last trip over spring break to Maui, we booked 10 days in advance. We couldn’t get the whale-watching time we wanted. Booking four weeks in advance is recommended during the busy summer months of June, July, and August.
- Concierges can book you a tour when you arrive, but check the price. All the booking links in this article are direct bookings with the local tour operators. No middleman. You are getting the best price. We earn a small commission at no cost to you when you book on our website. We are not partnered with all the tour companies below, as we are sharing all Kaanapali snorkeling tours.

- The catamarans offer a complimentary bar (open bar) or drink tickets on their tours. They offer local Hawaii beers, like Maui Brew Co, Mai Tais, and other cocktails.
- Tipping is not required, but it is welcome! If you had a good time with the crew, you can tip in cash or Venmo at the end of your tour. $10 to $15 per person is customary, but do as much as feels comfortable. Here is our Guide to Tipping in Hawaii.
- Kaanapali snorkeling tours are beach loading! Those with mobility issues should consider a tour that departs from Ma’alaea Harbor. See our map of Maui snorkeling tours below!
- Until Lahaina Harbor is rebuilt and opened to the public, Kaanapali Beach is the most convenient location for boat tours on the West Side of Maui.
- Being able to swim is a requirement for a snorkeling tour.
- What to bring: Snorkel tours will include quality snorkel equipment, flotation devices, snacks, juices, and water. You will need to bring a towel and sun protection. Some tours proved mineral-based sunscreen.
- Storage: There is room on the boat to store personal items. We recommend bringing a beach bag for your towels and other personal items. The power rafts will have limited storage space.
- Bathrooms: All Kaanapali snorkeling tours have toilets on board (heads). The catamarans will have more comfortable toilets compared to the rafts.
- Sea sickness is real, even on luxury catamarans that are more stable than monohull boats. Dramamine works! A pleasant reminder to take them before getting on board if you’re prone to motion sickness.
- Cancellations! If you need to cancel a tour, all tour companies provide full refunds. Check when you’re booking as cancellation windows differ. Some allow cancellations 24 hours in advance, while others allow 72 hours.
Jordan’s Take on Kaanapali Snorkeling Tours:
Erica and I are quick to recommend a boat tour when visiting Maui. Snorkel, sunset, or whale watching are great ways to get on the water for a truly unique Hawaii experience. Therefore, you can’t beat the convenience and snorkeling options if you’re staying in Kaanapali. Maui offers a variety of tours worth doing, from farm tours to stargazing. But, a Kaanapali boat tour is a quick and easy way to get on the water while hardly leaving your resort. Kaanapali is home to some of the Best Maui Resorts for Families. So we can walk out of the Westin Maui Resort and onto a Kaanapali snorkeling tour.
Details Before You Book a Kaanapali Snorkeling Tour
Feel free to jump down to our list of Kaanapali snorkeling tours below. Stay in this section if you’re looking for answers to what you should expect with a beach loading, snorkeling tour from Kaanapali Beach.
Kaanapali Snorkeling Tours are Beach Loading
Beach loading! Kaanapali Beach doesn’t have a harbor or a pier, so Kaanapali snorkeling tours depart from the beach. The catamaran will drive up to the surf break, or an inflatable raft will pick you up from the beach to ferry you to your boat.
Catamarans will have a staircase to the beach with handrails for safe loading. Waves will be splashing at your feet in about 12 inches of water.
Expect to get wet when loading from the beach. Water may come up to your knees. As you are going on a snorkeling trip, you will be in your bathing suit so this shouldn’t be an issue. We do not recommend wearing jeans or other tight pants (see our Hawaii packing list) as a cover layer.
In our experience, sandals and shoes are removed and collected on the beach in a bin. Shoes are not worn on board. Electronics should go in a bag in case they get wet in your pockets.

Kaanapali snorkeling tours are not recommended for guests with mobility issues. We recommend taking a tour from Ma’alaea Harbor if you have mobility issues.
Sail Maui offers Molokini Crater, Sunset Sails, and Whale Watching Tours from Ma’alaea Harbor. Plus, we have 10% off with Sail Maui! Click here for more information on more Sail Maui Tours in West Maui.
We have never had an issue with beach loading tours in Hawaii. The captains are experts at bringing the boats as far up the beach as possible. The crews provide a quick safety talk on the beach as everyone is lined up for an organized and quick loading. The biggest safety issue is usually hitting your head as you climb the stairs.
Watch our videos below as we share how our family boards from Kaanapali beach. You will have a better understanding of what to expect.
If you’re not sure about beach loading, explore tours leaving from Ma’alaea Harbor and other great activities using the map below.
Will I Swim with Sea Turtles on Kaanapali Tours?
The probability of swimming with sea turtles is high.
The captain and crew know this is a wonderful experience that the guests are planning on doing. Luckily, the turtles make that easy by frequenting the same spots along the West Maui shoreline.
Swimming with sea turtles depends on the snorkel location and if turtles happen to be in the area. The following rankings are from my experience snorkeling at these locations. They are all great places to see turtles!
- Honolua Bay has the highest probability of swimming with sea turtles.
- Olowalu and Mala Ramp are the second-best places to go.
- The Cliff House takes third place.

Seeing Dolphins on a Kaanapali Snorkeling Tour
There is a good probability that you will see dolphins when going to or from your snorkel spot.
You are not allowed to swim with dolphins per NOAA rules. Hawaiian Spinner dolphins hang out just offshore Kaanapali Beach. They enjoy jumping, spinning, and riding the pressure gradient along the boat’s bow. We love to sit on the net on the catamarans so we can get a great look at the dolphins.

Do You Go Sailing on the Catamarans?
Yes! In our experience, on Kaanapali snorkeling tours, the captains will motor out to the snorkel locations and then sail back to Kaanapali. This is especially true when they head north to the Cliff House or Honolua Bay.
Sailing will depend on the conditions, so it is not guaranteed. The crew understands that choosing a catamaran means you want to sail, so that is what they will try to do!

Kaanapali Snorkel Tour Locations
We all have commitment issues. Some Kaanapali snorkeling tours say where they are going, while others are not ready to put their snorkel locations in print. This lack of commitment is due to snorkel conditions.
The captain will choose the preferred snorkeling destination for the day. This allows guests to enjoy the ideal conditions and visibility.
Are you planning to go snorkeling from shore? See our 11 Best Snorkeling Spots on Maui.

Don’t worry about feeling crowded at your snorkel spots. As the tour boats go to different locations and at different times of the day, you will most likely be the only boat in the bay.
Here are the common snorkel locations along the bays of West Maui, starting on the south and heading north.
- Olowalu is Maui’s most pristine reef and best visited on a boat tour. Turtle cleaning stations abound. We swam with a Hawaiian Monk Seal here!
- Mala Wharf is also known as Mala Ramp. It is a derelict pier outside of Lahaina. A great place for turtles and fish as they love the artificial reef from the pier that fell into the ocean.
- Black Rock can be snorkeled from shore. The tour boats don’t stop here as there isn’t a mooring. Be careful! It is one of our favorite Maui snorkeling spots, but strong currents around the point make it dangerous. Here is our Full Guide on Black Rock Beach.
- Namalu Bay (Cliff House at Kapalua) is called the Cliff House for the building perched on the edge of the cliff. The protected cove has rock formations and great visibility. It is hard to access from shore, making it a wonderful place to visit on a snorkeling tour.
- Honolua Bay is the best snorkel spot on West Maui. It isn’t convenient to snorkel from shore, so a boat tour is a great way to explore the bay. Sea turtles and beautiful coral formations are abundant near the few boat moorings.
- Lana’i is an island 6 miles offshore of Maui. You can take a 90-minute ferry to Lanai or take a luxury snorkeling tour. A few of the tours below go to Lanai’s coastline for dolphins and pristine reefs, and Trilogy lands ashore for beach time and BBQ. See our Lanai Day Trip article to understand Lanai.
If you can’t go on a Kaanapali tour to Lanai, check out our list of The 6 Best Lanai Snorkel Tours.

Northwest Maui can get large swells during the winter months. This can cause high surf, strong currents, and poor visibility at Honolua and Slaughterhouse. The captain will choose another location if the conditions are not good.
Parking for Kaanapali Tours
One of the best parts of staying in Kaanapali Resorts is the tours leaving from your hotel’s beach. For folks who are staying down the road in Napili or Kapalua, parking may be top of mind when booking a Kaanapali tour.
Your Kaanapali snorkeling tour companies will provide information on where to park in Kaanapali Resorts when you book your tickets and in the email confirming your reservation. We always save the parking information in our itinerary and make sure we have the Google Map directions available.
You can park at hotels for tours that leave in front of resorts, like Trilogy leaves from the Kaanapali Sheraton, and Teralani leaves from the Outrigger Kaanapali Beach Resort. The tour company may provide a discounted rate for parking.

Most Kaanapali tours leave from the beach in front of Whalers Village Shopping Center. This is the middle of Kaanapali, and there is abundant parking at the shopping center’s garage. The tour company may provide validated parking. It is great when they do. If they don’t, you can get your parking validated by buying something in the shopping center.
We never give up hope on finding a spot in the few public parking lots in Kaanapali Resorts. There are four public parking lots dotted along the main road lining the beach. Each lot has about 15 to 20 spots. They are small and fill up quickly! Look for the public parking signs and good luck!

How Much to Pay for Kaanapali Snorkeling Tours?
Kaanapali snorkeling tours range from $112 to $185

Sea Maui* for Well-Priced Luxury Catamaran
Sea Maui has two large, comfortable, and never crowded catamarans and five tour options.
We are listing them first because they offer the most popular tour types on wonderful catamarans and at a good price.
We have gone out on Sea Maui twice! Once for their whale watching tour and another time on their Premium Sunset Dinner Cruise.
- Why we like them: They offer a luxury catamaran experience at a good price. Their catamarans have netting in the front with bean bags. Sit up front or on the benches as the crew gets drinks for you. The boat does not feel crowded or like a booze cruise. They depart from central Kaanapali, and they validate parking!!!
- Drawbacks: Their food is average, tasty, but nothing to write home about.
- Passenger Size: 48 guests
- Boat Type: Catamaran
- Departure: In front of Whalers Village Shopping Center. Meet at their kiosk that is beachside, near Leilani’s restaurant.

Trilogy for Luxury Catamaran
The Trilogy Family (Coon Family) has become an institution on Maui. Grandpa started the business in the early 70s when he moved to Maui with his family. They were the first ones to operate tours to Lanai for day trips. The third generation has continued the family business but with numerous luxury sailing catamarans and numerous tour offerings. Here are their Kaanapali tours.
West Maui has Trilogy for a luxury experience, and South Maui has the Kai Kanani family. Kai Kananai has our favorite Molokini Snorkel Tour and Adventure Sunset Sail.
I heard a story about Trilogy during the Lahaina Fire. A Trilogy family member drove to Lahaina Harbor to save their newest catamaran. He tossed his truck keys to a family who was trapped at the harbor. He then navigated the catamaran out of the harbor by compass as the smoke was too thick to see.

Ka’anapali Ocean Adventures* Power Boat Snorkeling Tours
These Kaanapali snorkel tours are an adventure as much as a tour of the marine life of Maui. Hop aboard a powerboat for a fast ride to your snorkeling destination.
Head out on their unique vessel, the 50-foot Sanity. The power boat will take you up the Maui coast for snorkeling or across the Au’au channel to Lanai. The boat has shaded seating for the majority of the passengers, a marine head (toilet) on board, and fresh water showers.
We love snorkeling tours to Lanai, and this is a great option if you’re staying in Kaanapali. You will get to Lanai fast to enjoy extra time in the water. You will most likely see Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins offshore Lanai and whales during whale season.
- Why we like them: Our family enjoys power boat trips as much as a luxury catamaran. The ride is part of the adventure! You also get more time in the water and the chance to go to more locations.
- Drawbacks: Make sure you get a seat in the shade! This is a no-frills snorkel tour (no complimentary bar or buffet lunch option).
- UNIQUE: They offer Yamaha Ski Scooter rentals on board. They go 3.7 MPH under the water. For pricing and to book, click the Book buttons below. It is also BYOB

Kaanapali Resorts History
The word “kāʻanapali” means “the divided hill.” Since its beginnings as an ancient Hawaiian village, Kāʻanapali has been a spiritual and recreational home for generations of Hawaiians. The current site of the Royal Lahaina Resort was a thriving fishing village called Keka’a.
Amfac, Inc. first built the resort area in the 1960s along a mile stretch of beach. Many more hotels and condos have been built since then. Today, Kaanapali is a planned resort community of 1,161 (2020 census) full-time residents. The resort area is 4.9 square miles and is divided into South and North Kaanapali.
Teralani* Catamaran Snorkel & Marine Life Tours
Teralani is similar to Gemini in terms of cost and experience on a large catamaran. Their brightly colored boats line Kaanapali Beach. On board their three, 2005-built, 65-foot-long catamarans, you will find fresh water showers, plenty of shade, tables for two people, and a hard-working crew.
Compared to Gemini, Teralani has a more local and diverse menu on their snorkel tours. Their half-day snorkeling tour is also an hour longer than Gemini’s, as they will go to two snorkeling spots. Pick the tour that’s right for you!

- Why we like them: With multiple boats and tours going out daily, they are a great option for a quality catamaran snorkel tour at a good price.
- Drawbacks: The large tour company lacks the personal touch and feel of the smaller operators.
- UNIQUE: Ages 5 and under are free per paying adult on the snorkel tours!
- Passenger Size: 49 guests
- Boat Type: Catamaran
- Departure: Kaanapali Beach, in front of the Outrigger Kaanapali Beach Resort

Teralani Marine Life Tours
If you are interested in swimming with turtles or going on a sailing safari for dolphins, check out these tours from Teralani:
The Magic Merman Power Raft
Here is another adventure boat ride tour from Kaanapali for you! Board a 40-foot power raft to snorkel offshore West Maui. Choose from the two tours below. There is a toilet on board and shade covers all the seats!
Tour companies will advertise that the catamarans are built for 75 passengers, but they only take 49 passengers. That doesn’t excite me as much as Magic Merman whose raft is built for 28 but he only takes 20 passengers. 20 on a snorkeling tour is a great size!
- Why we like them: We enjoy a high-speed power raft as the boat ride is as much of an adventure as the snorkeling. We like more time in the water and talking story with the crew. There is a marine naturalist on board to answer all your turtle, whale, and marine life questions.
- Drawbacks: It is hard to think of one! It might not be great for young kids, as it is a lot of time in the sun. No frills on the raft but lots of thrills.
- UNIQUE: Only 20 passengers on this tour! BYOB with your own small cooler (no glass)
- Passenger Size: 20 guests
- Boat Type: Power Boat Raft
- Departure: Kaanapali Beach, in front of Whalers Village Shopping Center
- Parking: Whalers Village Shopping Center, validated parking is not offered.
- Loading: Inflatable raft will pick you up on the beach and take you to the raft
