In the Kaanapali vs Kihei discussion, the two Maui destinations could not be more different. For those visiting Maui for the first time, picking Kihei or Kaanapali will set the mood for your Hawaii vacation.

Erica (my wife) and I have stayed in both Kihei and Kaanapali on numerous vacations, staycations, and day trips when we lived in Lahaina. Both areas add to the reasons why we love Maui.

Kaanapali is a resort development with three and four-star hotels, timeshares, and vacation rentals along Kaanapali Beach in West Maui. A shopping center, resort restaurants, snorkeling and whale watching tours, and golfing provide a Hawaii beach vacation vibe.

Kihei is a town in South Maui, where the main road, South Kihei Road, features vacation rental condo complexes and strip malls on one side and snorkeling and sunset beaches on the other. Local restaurants, bars, and grocery stores, as well as proximity to Haleakala National Park and the Road to Hana, make it a cost-conscious place to stay. Where Kihei lacks the charm of a Hawaii historical town, it makes up for it as a practical place to stay.

If price is your primary decision-maker, Kihei is the winner. The value hotels and numerous vacation rental condos make for a more affordable trip to Maui.

Jordan’s Take on Kaanapali vs Kihei: Where to Stay on Maui

Kaanapali is our preferred place to stay, as we enjoy the resort pools, the luxury feel, and the activities in West Maui. Kaanapali vs. Wailea is a more accurate comparison, as both locations are resort developments built for a classic Maui vacation.

We enjoy staying in Kihei when we are on an extended Maui vacation (two weeks or more) or plan to spend our vacation exploring the island. We don’t need resort amenities on such trips. Kihei is a welcome respite to return for a food truck dinner and a comfortable, reasonably priced vacation rental.

Comparison Table: Kaanapali vs Kihei

When comparing Kihei and Kaanapali, another dad may consider Kihei to be more family-friendly. I can’t argue with his trip snorkeling at Charley Young Beach, where his son saw sea turtles. Or his happiness for saving hundreds on a vacation rental for his family of five, compared to staying in Kaanapali.

You can find fine dining in both locations. You can swim with sea turtles on their beaches. Both areas can feel laid-back because we’re in Hawaii! Kihei and Kaanapali are both great places to stay on Maui. The big difference, which is vital to many, is whether you want to stay in a resort atmosphere or a town.

Which Is Better for You? Kaanapali vs Kihei

Where to stay on Maui for families, Kaanapali or Kihei for couples, honeymooners, or first-time visitors to Maui, let me share details by travel style. Erica and I have been traveling to Hawaii for decades, and we have done it all!

• Families with Kids: Kihei for affordability, casual dining, and calm beaches. Kaanapali is ideal for resort pools with waterslides and splash pads, kid-friendly activities, and walkability. Our family prefers Kaanapali for a family resort vacation. In the Kaanapali vs Kihei debate, this one depends on your family!
  
• Kaanapali or Kihei for Honeymooners: Kaanapali is the more luxurious and romantic option. Enjoy sunset strolls, fine dining, sunset cruises, and a nicer selection of Maui beachfront hotels.
  
• Budget Travelers: Kihei is your best option, offering easy access to local eateries (Cinnamon Roll Place directions!), grocery stores like Foodland, and reasonably priced hotels and vacation rentals.
  
• First-Time Visitors: Kaanapali is best for first-time visitors to Maui. Kaanapali provides excellent hotels, luaus, beach access, and tours from the beach and in West Maui. Kaanapali provides the Hawaii vacation you expect.
  
• Returning Visitors or Adventurers: Kihei is a good place to stay on Maui for returning visitors and those who want to explore the island all day. Kihei serves as a central base for exploring Maui. As you’ve been to Maui before, you will have a better idea of the towns, how to get around the island, and be able to identify the local restaurants.

Kaanapali: What to Expect

We visit Kauai for its outdoor beauty and solitude. We go to the Big Island for adventures and Kona coffee. Oahu is our place for food and a cosmopolitan Hawaii. Maui is our place for a little of everything. Kaanapali is a little bit of everything Maui has to offer. 

We enjoy Kaanapali for its breadth of activities, massive beaches, and affordable luxury resorts (reasonably priced compared to Wailea!). When we want a Maui beach vacation, Kaanapali Resorts provides all we need without having to leave. 

Unpack the resort wear, rent snorkel equipment, and book a Kaanapali luau because you’re ready for a Maui resort vacation. 

The sprawling Kaanapali resort area covers 4.9 square miles with 1,161 full-time residents (2020 census). There are thousands of hotel rooms. Thousands of timeshare units and thousands of vacation rentals. 

Kaanapali can feel crowded in the shopping centers, waiting for a seat at Monkeypod Kitchen or walking the boardwalk. But the expansive beach and large resorts won’t make you feel overwhelmed. Kaanapali is ideal for stress-free stays.

Major Kaanapali Attractions

• Whalers Village is the central shopping center, featuring a variety of local and national shops, restaurants, and activities, including an Escape Room.
• Black Rock is the famous cliff jumping spot and the notorious snorkel spot. Understand ocean conditions and never snorkel alone when you snorkel at Black Rock, namely, the cove behind the point.
• Kaanapali Beach stretches for a mile along the main resort area with the Hyatt Regency, Westin Maui, and Sheraton Maui. Enjoy sunsets and views of the island of Lanai.
• Beach Loading Tours from Kaanapali! Depart from the beach in front of your hotel for an epic snorkeling tour along the West Maui coastline or a Kaanapali Sunset Cruise. Kaanapali Whale Watching tours depart from the beach from December to early April.

I enjoy Kaanapali for its lively atmosphere. Walking around, I enjoy hearing ukulele and guitarists from the beachside restaurants. Live music and happy hours (pau hana) are plentiful. I grab a mai tai to enjoy the sunsets.

Kāʻanapali is spelled with a kahakō [ō] and an ‘okina (‘). A kahakō designates a long vowel sound (aahh), and an ‘okina represents a glottal stop. Think of it as a pause between consonants, like uh-oh. I am omitting the kahakō and ‘okina in Kāʻanapali to ease reading.

Pros for Staying in Kaanapali

• The Kaanapali Maui resort area is built for a beach vacation. You don’t need a rental car in Kaanapali unless you want to explore more of Maui. 
• Is Kaanapali good for families? We find it to be an excellent place for family vacations, thanks to the Maui family-friendly hotels, great resort pools, diverse food options, and numerous activities for kids.
• Kaanapali is great for couples and luxury travelers, too. While not as exclusive as the Wailea resorts, Kaanapali offers four-star accommodations, adults-only pools, fine dining, and Maui activities for couples.
• You can find a lively atmosphere with a luxury vibe. Picture sipping a mai tai with a sunset view in your resort wear without dudes taking shots at the bar.
• Kaanapali has less wind than Kihei, in my experience. Kihei gets the trade winds whipping through the central valley. While Kaanapali and Lahaina can still experience windy conditions in the afternoons, Kaanapali generally offers calmer conditions.
• Kaanapali is cooler in the summer than Kihei. See the temperature chart below for details.

Cons for Staying in Kaanapali

• Kaanapali is more expensive than Kihei in both vacation rentals and hotels. You get what you pay for, as Kaanapali accommodations are generally nicer than those in Kihei.
• Kaanapali is a resort area, so you have to drive into West Maui towns, like Lahaina, Olowalu, and Napili, for local stores and local grindz (eats). 
• Kaanapali gets slightly more rain than Kihei. The difference is hardly noticeable as both are on the dry side (leeward) of the island.

Kihei: What to Expect

Kihei is described as more local, authentic, and casual than the developed resort area of Kaanapali. While that is true, Kihei is far from a charming Hawaiian town. 

Kihei grew fast, resulting in urban sprawl. The population of Kihei was 21,423 at the 2020 census and is 9.3 square miles in size.

South Kihei Road is where the majority of the hotels, condos, restaurants, and shops are located. Mauka (mountain side) of South Kihei Road is lined with condos and strip malls. Makai (ocean side) are Kamaole Beaches I, II, and III, Kalama Beach Park, Charley Young, and more of the famous South Maui beaches. Visitors to Kihei can walk along the sidewalk of South Kihei Road to access restaurants, shops, and beach rental shops.

Kaanapali vs Kihei Tip: The most luxurious things in Hawaii are free or low-cost. Playing on the beach, sitting poolside, enjoying the ocean views, whale-watching from shore, and basking in the tropical weather are what a trip to Maui is all about. Don’t get hung up on Kaanapali or Kihei; you’ll have a great trip regardless.

The town is approximately 0.75 miles wide and spans 6 miles along the coast. Piilani Highway is the Kihei bypass and the highway to Wailea. South Kihei Road and Piilani Highway can experience heavy traffic in the morning and late afternoon.

Kihei has a local town feel in some aspects, with beach volleyball in Kalama Park, a new high school off Piilani Highway, and numerous beaches featuring friendly lifeguards and kids on swings. 

The vibe can also feel a bit touristy and grungy. Strip malls have t-shirt stands, and snorkel stores are selling reduced tour tickets with timeshare presentations. Kihei’s tiki bars and dive bars add color to the overproduced resort bars in Kaanapali, but can also feel dicey at night. 

The Triangle in Kihei has a reputation for drunken revelry. Located in central Kihei, at the Kihei Kalama Village, is a collection of local bars. While I’d get a drink at them during the day, I wouldn’t take my date there at night. They are an excellent place for live music, drink specials, and watching sports.

Major Kihei Attractions

• Beaches! You can find beaches of all sizes in Kihei. Most have lifeguards on duty, toilets, and showers! See our list of 9 Best South Maui Beaches
• Molokini Crater is closer to Kihei than Kaanapali. This makes it easier to hop on a sunrise snorkel tour to Molokini from Maluaka Beach or a 15-minute power raft ride from South Kihei Harbor.
• Take surf lessons at Kalama Beach Park, near Cove Beach Park (click for directions). The slow-rolling break is ideal for learning to surf.

The most significant benefit of staying in Kihei is the affordable hotels and vacation rentals. Maui is an expensive island to visit (and the best island to visit!), primarily due to the high hotel rates in Kaanapali and Wailea.

Pros for Staying in Kihei

• Kihei is a good place to stay on Maui as it is more affordable. It is hard to beat the price. 
• Kihei is closer to things to do on Maui, like the start of the Road to Hana, Haleakala National Park, Upcountry Maui, and things to do in Kahului.
• We love the food truck parks in Kihei! South Maui Gardens, South Maui Fish Company, and Maui Food Trucks of Kihei on Piikea Avenue have something for the whole family.
• Kihei has better places to eat than Kaanapali. While we like Kaanapali restaurants, we prefer the local, family-owned restaurants in Kihei. Places like Kihei Caffe, Nalu’s South Shore Grill, Paia Fish Market, and Cafe Olei Kihei are excellent and well-priced.
• A benefit of staying in a vacation rental in Kihei is the ability to cook and eat in the condo. Visit Foodland and Safeway for poke, groceries, and deli counters. Costco is about 25 minutes away from Kihei.
• Beaches are a pro for Kaanapali and Kihei. Kihei beaches are smaller and more charming than Kaanapali’s long stretches.

Cons for Staying in Kihei

• The accommodations are reasonably priced but don’t expect a luxury stay. Check reviews for individual units when booking on Airbnb or Vrbo. 
• Kihei is less walkable than Kaanapali. While the sidewalks and clusters of shopping centers are helpful, you will need a car to get around Kihei and greater Maui.
• Kihei is not as polished as the Kaanapali resort area. The beaches, restaurants, and shopping centers are clean, but the town can feel dated and a bit gritty in places.
• Is Kihei family-friendly? Kihei is a family-friendly destination, offering lifeguarded beaches and a variety of dining options. However, the walkability score is low, and there are not many kid-friendly activities in Kihei.  In the Kaanapali vs Kihei debate, I give the prize to Kaanapali. 

Kihei Parking Notice: The County of Maui is proposing flat daily parking fees for some Maui beaches. The Kihei beaches of Kamaole have been identified as paid parking zones. Check Park Maui to see if they have implemented parking fees.

Kihei vs Wailea

Kihei vs. Wailea is not a common debate, as they are so different in terms of price and atmosphere. We enjoy the local restaurants and beaches in Kihei, but we also want the luxury of the Wailea area. 

So, our favorite place to stay is on the border of Kihei and Wailea. Ekahi Village is a vacation rental complex with sprawling lawns and numerous pools and is located on Keawakapu Beach. Our kids love playing at the pool and then running out onto the beach for some waves.

Is Kaanapali worth the price?

Kaanapali hotels and restaurants are worth the price for a fun and relaxing Maui vacation. Kaanapali is all about those beachtime, summer vibes with the classic Hawaii feel. Compared to Wailea’s luxury resorts, Kaanapali can provide reasonable prices with modern and comfortable hotels.

You can find values in Kaanapali! The Honokowai food truck park, situated near Times Supermarket, offers a variety of great local eats. Farm tours are an underrated Hawaii thing to do, at a reasonable price. Remember, the most luxurious things in Hawaii are free, such as relaxing on the beach and sitting poolside.

Can you swim at Kihei beaches?

Kihei beaches are excellent for swimming and snorkeling. The shore break is usually light for young swimmers, and the beaches have lifeguards on duty. You can choose from numerous beaches along the South Maui Shore. Plus, the waves are usually small during the winter months.

Kihei Beach Safety: Always check ocean conditions before heading into the mighty Pacific Ocean. Speak to lifeguards, and if in doubt, don’t go out. Drownings are the highest cause of fatality for Hawaii visitors. Don’t swim in murky waters, as that increases the risk of a shark attack.

What’s the best area in Kihei to stay?

The best area to stay in Kihei is the southside. The best hotels and vacation rentals are located across from Charley Young Beach, extending down to Kamaole Beach Park III. This area is the most walkable in Kihei as there are numerous shopping centers and restaurants along South Kihei Road.

Is Kihei close to the Road to Hana?

Kihei is the closest resort area to stay on Maui to the Road to Hana. Kahului is considered the gateway to the Road to Hana. Kahului is about a 25-minute drive (13 miles) from central Kihei. 

Kaanapali resort area is a 45-minute drive from Kahului, and Wailea is a 30-minute drive from Kahului. You can stay in some boutique hotels in Paia or Kahului, but options are limited.

Can you walk to restaurants in Kaanapali?

You can walk to numerous restaurants in Kaanapali. There are restaurants in the resorts, a food court in Whalers Village, and additional restaurants located within Whalers Village. You can walk along the beach on the boardwalk or along Kaanapali Parkway to the restaurants. You can also take the Kaanapali Trolley between the resorts and the golf courses. 

The main walkable area is the central Kaanapali beach resort area on the south side of Kaanapali, home to the Sheraton Maui, and extending down to the Hyatt Regency. North Kaanapali is less walkable to restaurants.

Kaanapali vs Kihei Itinerary Examples

I’d choose to stay in Kihei on a 7-day economical trip to Maui. I’d find a low-cost vacation rental in Kihei along South Kihei Road. Ideally, it would be across from a Kamaole Beach and walkable to some shops and restaurants. Kihei Ali’i Kai would be a perfect option.

I’d explore Maui all day using the Maui Wayfinder Itinerary. That was a plug for our itinerary! If I don’t eat at the recommended dinner spot in the itinerary, I’d return to Kihei for food trucks or pau hana (happy hour). With the money I save by staying in Kihei, I’d skip driving the Road to Hana and take this Road to Hana tour instead.

On a romantic couple’s trip to Maui, I’d head straight to Kaanapali. With a room booked at the Westin Maui in Kaanapali, we’d eat at Ulu Kitchen for sunset or walk to Monkeypod Kitchen. We’d enjoy a romantic beach vacation without a rental car. I’d take Uber or taxis to Napili Bay or Kapalua Bay to mix up our beach time.
