When we lived on Maui, stargazing never made our list. We reserved that for the Big Island. But after finally going on a stargazing tour on Maui, I realized how wrong we were—and how incredible Maui’s night sky really is.
For some reason, stargazing was reserved for the Big Island—something only possible there or worth a stargazing tour.
Now that we’ve gone on a stargazing tour on Maui, I see how silly this was.
In this guide, we’ll share our personal stargazing experiences on Maui, compare the top tours, and offer tips for making the most of Maui’s dark skies.
We are partners with the tours that are not marked with an asterisk below. We provide information on all these local companies, even if we don’t receive a commission for recommending them!
See our Guide to Stargazing on Hawaii if you’re planning to visit other islands.

Can You Stargaze on Maui?
Yes! You can stargaze on Maui with a guided tour or in a DIY style.
Hawaii’s dark skies make Maui an excellent place to observe celestial objects. When stargazing on Maui, let an astronomer share the stories of the constellations and the science of the stars.
We lived along the shore in Lahaina when we lived on Maui. The sky was far darker than anyplace I had lived on the mainland, so looking at the stars and planets every night was a treat.
It wasn’t till we attended a BBQ at Ku’ia Estates Cacao Farm, one of our favorite Maui Farm Tours, that stargazing on Maui blew my mind!
The cacao farm was on the side of the West Maui Mountains, about a mile up from Lahaina, with all its lights. I was shocked by how the Milky Way was visible across the sky. As it was a moonless night, we could feel the Milky Way and the stars lighting up the cacao farm. It was an unforgettable Maui night.
We didn’t film the BBQ at Ku’ia Estates, but we did capture a private tour earlier that day. Watch our video below if you want to visit Maui’s best cacao farm.
How to DIY Stargaze on Maui
You can find a dark spot on Haleakala Volcano after sunset (here is our Hawaii’s National Park Tips!) or get some distance between you and the lights of your resort. Park yourself in a beach chair with binoculars or your naked eyes to enjoy Maui stargazing for free.
Here is my recommended gear for DIY stargazing on Maui:
- Red flashlight
- Constellation apps
- Folding chairs
- Warm clothes
- Binoculars
We did this for years and loved it! But Maui is a trip of a lifetime experience. With telescopes and the knowledge of a local astronomer, you can see a lot more. Booking a Maui stargazing tour is one of those memorable Maui experiences.

Our mission is simple: make your Hawaiian adventure both seamless and meaningful.
Thanks for joining us on the journey—aloha and happy travels!
Why Stargazing on Maui Is Worth Every Penny
Did you know that platinum, gold, and other heavy elements come from neutron stars colliding? The resulting kilonova explosion created the metal that you are wearing.
We learned that from our stargazing tour with Donna! I thought a stargazing tour on Maui would involve looking through a telescope as the astronomer moved from one constellation to the next. They do that, but the stargazing tour is a journey.
Your guide will share stories of the cosmos that provide context for what you’re looking at through the eyepiece. It could be a mythological story from Greece or Hawaii about the origin of the stars, or facts about the moon.
Plus, the astronomers will have one or more telescopes set up for unique viewings. An experience that you cannot achieve with binoculars!
The captivating storytelling and seeing heavenly bodies you have never seen make stargazing on Maui worth it for us!
Ready to make your Maui nights unforgettable? Whether you want to gaze from the beach or the top of a volcano, here are the best stargazing tours to book now.
– If you’re staying at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa in the Kaanapali Resorts, go to their Tour of the Stars resort activity. The rooftop program is 8 PM and 9 PM. It is a Maui classic!
– Donna is our favorite! She lights up the tour with her energy and storytelling. Learn more and book her Stargazers Anonymous Tour for groups or privately. She is in West Maui.
– Stargaze from a beach in Kapalua, West Maui! Stargaze West Maui is a convenient and well-priced stargazing option.
– Head up to the top of Haleakala for sunset and a 60-minute guided tour of the stars with Maui Stargazing*
Essential Tips for Stargazing on Maui
Before we discuss the stargazing tours on Maui, here are some tips. These are based on our experience, reader feedback, and tips from local astronomers and astrophotographers.
High Elevation or Low Elevation for Maui Stargazing?
Below, you will find Maui stargazing tours from sea level up to the summit of Haleakala. Stargazing in Hawaii is famous for viewing the stars from the top of volcanoes in the middle of the Pacific. There is a reason Mauna Kea and Haleakala are a favorite destination for telescopes and things the military doesn’t want to discuss.
Are you headed to the Big Island? Consider visiting Mauna Kea for Stargazing.
Darker skies can be expected at the top of Haleakala on Maui. We have stayed to view the stars after sunset, which is incredible. But you don’t have to go to the top of the volcano.

Stargazing at sea level is still worth it on Maui. The sky will be darker than on the mainland if you take a little effort to escape the resorts and houses. Stargazing tours on Maui do this, of course.
I do not know how true this is, but it made sense when I heard this story. The guides on our stargazing tour on the Big Island said that eyes have less oxygen at high elevations, resulting in poor vision. They could have said that because they offered a tour at sea level instead of the more popular tour on Mauna Kea, but we were already on their tour!
Dress for the Weather
Wear warm clothes when stargazing on Maui. You will quickly acclimate to the warm (hot and humid!) tropical weather during the day. At night, the trade winds will provide a lovely, cooling breeze. As you may be at a higher elevation, warm clothes are necessary.
When packing your bags for Hawaii, pack the following for stargazing on Maui:
- A sweatshirt or hoodie
- Comfortable long pants
- A light jacket (especially during winter months)
- A blanket (you can borrow one from your hotel)
If you’re stargazing at the summit of Haleakala, consider wearing layers! Haleakala can get into the low 50s as the night goes on. When we went up for sunrise, it was in the mid-forties.
Don’t Worry About the Moon
A full moon is not a problem! We went stargazing during a full moon, and it was incredible. We took phenomenal pictures of the moon, like the picture below.
I was always told not to go stargazing during a full moon. It made sense, the night sky is bright! But Donna and other astronomers have told me they can still see planets, nebulae, and constellations on a full moon sky in Hawaii. They aren’t just selling tours as we had a wonderful time out on our Maui stargazing tour.

Take Photos with Help
Bring your phones or cameras to take pictures! The astronomer will have a lens that enables picture taking. That is how we got the moon photos. It is tricky to get the photo, so don’t be shy to ask for help.

What Happens if There is Bad Weather?
This was our biggest concern when booking a stargazing tour on Maui. A few clouds can disrupt your stargazing experience!
- Book your Maui stargazing tour early in your trip. If the weather is bad, they will reschedule your tour for later in the week.
- Your tour can change its location. Some tour companies, like Stargazers Anonymous, offer multiple places to choose from along West Maui. With Maui’s microclimates, moving a few miles up the road may mean no clouds.
- Check the tour’s cancellation policy. These tours will be canceled with a full refund if adverse weather occurs. Maui Stargazing offers 25% off if it is partially cloudy.
Final tip on stargazing on Maui: If you can’t swim or fear a Hawaii shark attack, a stargazing tour is a great option!

Stargazers Anonymous
Let Donna Meistrich, a passionate astronomer, take you up the West Maui Mountains for this fascinating stargazing tour in Ka’anapali, Maui.
Our family enjoyed the fantastic tales of supernovas, the birthplace of gold and platinum, and the stargazing! She moved from one constellation to the next.
This tour is handicap accessible. When you book the tour or afterwards, let Donna know if you need assistance with access. (We also have a Hawaii handicap accessibility guide to help you with the rest of your vacation planning.)
- Location: West Maui, specifically between Olowalu and Kapalu
- Elevation: Low Altitude
- Price: $125 (discounts for families)
- Duration: 1.5 Hours
- Tours: Thurs – Sun at 8 PM
- Ages: All ages are welcome!
- Why We Like This Maui Stargazing Tour: The location near our hotel in Kaanapali made it quick to drive to her telescopes, the price point and duration were perfect for our family with a three-year-old and a seven-year-old. The kids loved stargazing as much as Erica and I did. Her stories and energy made for a memorable experience.
We also liked how this tour was on the slopes of the West Maui Mountains. It made for a dark sky while being close to Ka’anapali. The hard ground and chairs she provided made for a comfortable stargazing event.
- Considerations: Donna has recently launched her stargazing tours. She does an excellent job, but she may develop operational issues as her popularity grows. Feel free to email or message her with any questions!
We share more details on the tour in our complete review here: Stargazing Tour in Ka’anapali. Or you can book directly with Donna using the buttons below.

Stargaze West Maui
Here is another stargazing tour in West Maui! Head up to Kapalua to stargaze on Ironwoods Beach.
The secluded beach between The Montage and the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is great for dark skies. Enjoy the surf and the stories as Stargaze West Maui shows you constellations, planets, and deep sky objects like the Andromeda Galaxy and Orion Nebula.
- Location: Ironwoods Beach, Kapalua (West Maui) Click for directions to Ironwoods Beach
- Elevation: Sea Level
- Price: $85 per adult, $75 for children 6 to 12 years old
- Duration: 1.5 Hours
- Tours: Daily at 8 PM
- Ages: 6 and older are welcome
- Why We Like This Maui Stargazing Tour: The price can’t be beat! A good price for the experience. A pro and a con is stargazing on the beach! The beach location is dark and adds a lovely experience to view the stars with the surf. The location in Kapalua is convenient for those staying in Napili and Kapalua.
- Considerations: Stargazing is on the beach, so you may get sandy. Due to the stairs down the beach and the sand, this tour is not recommended for those with mobility challenges. They have one location, and it is located in northwest Maui, hence there is a higher chance of rain and cloudy skies.

Maui Stargazing*
Don’t let the price scare you away. While it is more expensive than our last two Maui stargazing tours, this tour is a full experience. The tour company is famous on Maui for offering such an extended stargazing on Maui tour, with such great reviews.
The tour meets at Kula Lodge and Marketplace. Arrive early to order food for dinner. From there, you board their van to take you to Haleakala National Park.
You will arrive for the famous Haleakala sunset.
Here is information on visiting Haleakala for Sunset vs Sunrise. If you plan on doing a Haleakala sunrise tour with 10% off, you may not want to head back up!
Once the sun has set, the largest portable telescope on Haleakala will be out for a 60-minute guided tour of Maui’s night sky.
The Maui Stargazing tour includes winter jackets and snowpants to keep you warm!
- Location: Meet at Kula Lodge and Marketplace (click for directions)
- Elevation: High Altitude
- Price: $250 per adult, $235 for 15 and under
- Duration: 6 – 7 Hours
- Tours: Daily at 3:15 PM
- Ages: All ages are welcome
- Why We Like This Maui Stargazing Tour: This is a whole stargazing experience on Maui! The tour of Haleakala, sunset, and a 60-minute stargazing tour from close to 10,000 feet is a full evening out. If you’re a passionate stargazer, this is the tour for you.
- Considerations: The price point and the tour length may not be for everyone. Be prepared for cold weather, a good amount of driving, and for the weather to change quickly. Book this tour early in your trip in case of poor conditions.

Experience the Magic of Stargazing on Maui
Still deciding if a stargazing tour is right for you? Here’s a quick summary of what to expect.
Here are the top 3 reasons to do a stargazing tour on Maui:
- Exceptionally Dark Skies: Maui’s remote location and limited light pollution—especially from elevated spots like Haleakala or quiet beaches in West Maui—create ideal conditions for viewing stars, planets, and even the Milky Way.
- Expert Guidance & Telescopes: Local astronomers provide fascinating stories, scientific context, and access to powerful telescopes that reveal celestial objects far beyond what the naked eye or binoculars can see.
- Unforgettable, Family-Friendly Experience: Whether you’re a casual sky-watcher or a space enthusiast, stargazing tours are memorable, educational, and accessible for all ages—perfect for families, couples, or solo travelers.
Every Maui local will mention the Tour of the Stars stargazing event at the Hyatt Regency in Ka’anapali. The tour is well-regarded, convenient, and well-organized. If you’re staying at the Hyatt, book this tour.
It is a testament to the ability to do good stargazing on Maui, as it is from a rooftop in Kaanapali Resorts. There is a lot of light pollution, yet visitors love this tour!
I hope I got you excited about stargazing on Maui. As Donna told us, the best part of stargazing is that you can do it on multiple visits to Maui. I realize that is from a tour operator, but her point is that the night sky changes throughout the year.
You can enjoy viewing different heavenly bodies whenever you stargaze on Maui.
