What to Look for in Hotels on Maui for a Family of 5
Before jumping into the list, here are a few key things to keep in mind when booking hotels in Hawaii for a family of 5.
Room Occupancy Limits
Many standard hotel rooms in Hawaii have a strict 4-person limit. Always double-check occupancy policies—even if the room looks large enough or it is on our list. The hotel’s policy may have changed!
Suites & Villas
Look for suites or villa-style accommodations. These often include:
- Separate living spaces
- Sofa beds or rollaway options
- Kitchenettes or full kitchens
Obviously, suites and villas will be more expensive. In a place that begs the question, Why Are Hotels in Hawaii So Expensive?, you may not want to spend the extra money.
The Fairmont Kea Lani is a great option for families! All the rooms are suites, and they have villas on the beach. The hotel is a great option if you’re looking to stay in Wailea, on Maui.
Connecting Rooms
Some hotels offer guaranteed or request-based connecting rooms, which can be a great option for families who want more space and privacy.
Some Hawaii hotels may offer a discount for booking a second room for your family. They won’t list it on their website, but you should call to see if they offer a family rate for two connecting rooms.
Resort Fees & Extra Guest Charges
Be aware that some hotels charge extra per additional guest, even if the room technically allows five.
Resorts in America love to have resort fees. Under federal law, they must include the fee in their advertised nightly rate. But, resort fees still sting.
Add in parking fees of $40 to $60 per night and Hawaii’s TAT tax, and fees will get you! The best thing is to know about these fees so you can budget for them. See our 17 Things to Go Wrong on a Trip to Hawaii for more tips!
