Hawaii sees an uptick in visitors, but it is not Hawaii’s busiest time of year. You can expect larger crowds in the main resort areas of Ka’anapali on Maui, Poipu on Kauai, Waikiki on Oahu, and Kona and Waikoloa on the Big Island. These family-friendly areas may feel a bit busy during spring break. But, busy doesn’t mean you will have a poor time.
Hawaii does not feel hectic or crowded during spring break.
During the spring break period, the weather is great; it is not too hot like summer, and the ocean conditions are better than in January and February. No wetsuit is required for swimming and snorkeling in Hawaii!
We lived in Hawaii for over five years, and now we go back often to vacation. We visit over spring break for the same reasons you are considering a trip to Hawaii: the kids are out of school.
I update this article annually based on our latest spring break in Hawaii experience. In 2025, we visited Maui and Kauai for spring break over a ten-day trip.

Hawaii isn’t like Florida for spring break, but you should plan ahead. Over the past four years, about 15 percent more visitors have come to Hawaii than during the rest of the winter months.
To plan for spring break, we recommend booking restaurants and tours four weeks in advance to get the date and time you want. If you’re staying in one of the resort areas I mentioned above, take this advice to heart. Those areas will be fun and lively, full of spring breakers like you.
Taking a trip to Hawaii for spring break is a great idea. Enjoy a tropical vacation to the Hawaiian Islands. You deserve a trip to Hawaii after surviving another winter.

- Lodging will be the most expensive line item on a spring break trip. Luckily, data shows that hotels and vacation rentals don’t increase substantially during spring break in Hawaii. Now, Christmas in Hawaii, that gets expensive.

- Avoid arriving on a Saturday, as visitor arrivals spike during the spring break period.

The Season of Spring Break Hawaii
Hawaii at Christmas is busy and expensive. Hawaii in July is also busy and expensive. That makes perfect sense to me because they are popular vacation periods.
The Christmas rush in Hawaii is essentially from December 20th ’til just after New Year’s Eve. July is part of the summer, out-of-school, let’s enjoy the weather period. People can travel, so they shall travel to Hawaii. Thank goodness for us. See our fantastic Hawaii itineraries.
Spring break is more challenging to lock down. It shifts a little each year as spring break depends on one’s school schedule. Per an unsourced AI response,

- Mid-March to Late March: Many universities and Southern schools will have their breaks during this period.
- Week Before Easter (Late March/Early April): This is often a very busy week for spring break, especially around the upcoming Easter holiday on April 5, 2026.
- Early to Mid-April: Some schools, particularly in the Northeast and Northern states, will have their spring breaks during this time.
Spring break in Hawaii is more of a Hawaii-in-March question.
As you will remember from our discussions on the best time to visit Hawaii, the low seasons in Hawaii are the spring and fall: April and May and September and October. March falls in the busy winter months, and spring breakers add to that total.
The data source comes from our friends at the Hawaii Department of Economic Development and Tourism. We call them DBEDT at home. Hawaii Tourism Authority pulls DBEDT data and adds more tourism-related information. We also reference them.
We made the graphs, and any faults in the analysis are purely our own. We focused on trends from January through April, examined the four major Hawaiian islands, and studied spring breakers in Hawaii from 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.
We do find some patterns in the data. Let me elaborate
I will also sprinkle in our experiences living in and visiting Hawaii during spring break.
Who Visits Hawaii for Spring Break?
You will notice that I enjoy calling Hawaii visitors spring breakers. I chuckle when I write this.
This is from me growing up in the ’90s with news coverage of crazy Daytona Beach spring breakers causing havoc. As Hawaii is among the world’s top five most expensive sand and sea destinations, you won’t find college kids there unless they are with their parents.
I haven’t seen vacation packages aimed at college students visiting Hawaii for spring break. Yes, I’ve done one of those packages for Mexico to Cabo. That’s a story. I don’t have stories like that for Hawaii.
You will not find packed beaches, rambunctious kids, and heavy drinking on your spring break in Hawaii vacation.
Waikiki is the premier nightlife destination in Hawaii. You will find about 10 to 15 percent more visitors in Waikiki, but that doesn’t mean the bars will be busier. Hawaii attracts a diverse population, including individuals from America, Canada, and Japan.
Overwhelmingly, the average age of visitors is the mid-40s, precisely 45-46. That has been consistent for the past 10 years. Families are twice as likely to travel with kids under 13 as they are to travel with teens. Only about 9 percent of visitors to Hawaii are between 18 and 24, which certainly doesn’t scream “college party destination.”

US visitors dominate the Hawaii market, with more than 15 times the number of visitors and the amount spent from any other major market area, and more than 3 times the number of visitors and the amount spent from all other major market areas combined. Basically, whether you go to Florida or Hawaii, you’ll be surrounded by American spring breakers, but you’ll still enjoy the company of some international visitors.

The Best Hawaiian Island for Spring Break in Hawaii
Spring breakers don’t have a favorite Hawaiian island. All the islands are popular to visit. Maui and Oahu show a slight increase in spring break visitors compared to the other islands. I get that, as Maui and Oahu are our recommendations for first-time visitors to Hawaii.
Our family loves visiting all four major Hawaiian islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu, and the Big Island. We have been to Lanai and Molokai, but we recommend visiting the four main islands.
I recommend visiting one island for a week-long trip to Hawaii. The average time people visit Hawaii is seven to eight days. If you island-hop during a week-long stay, you will lose almost a day to traveling. See our Island Hopping in Hawaii Guide for more information.
As the spring break crowd is hardly a crowd and prices aren’t historically high for spring break, choosing your island is more about your personal preferences.
If you want a more lively and entertaining spring break, full of the best restaurants and drinks on the islands, you must fly to Oahu. Enjoy the diverse food of Honolulu and relax on the North Shore with these things to do.
Maui is the place for a surf-and-turf spring break in Hawaii. Spring break is toward the end of the humpback whale season (December – March). Sometimes, the season extends ’til mid-April. Enjoy the water with a snorkeling tour along the coast or to Molokini Crater. Molokini Crater has visibility of over 100 feet and is 20 to 30 feet deep, and there are fantastic tours out to it. Spring Break Hawaii Cruise
If you want to see all the islands in one week, try the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America. It departs from Honolulu every week and goes to all four major islands. You will save on lodging and be able to put that money to doing awesome tours.

Is Hawaii Busy During Spring Break?
What is more important to you for your spring break in Hawaii? Crowds or Costs? Let’s start with crowds, even though I care more about my wallet.
March lies in the busy-ish winter months of Hawaii. Hawaii in the winter is a great time to visit, as all the snowbirds know. Great weather brings visitors, but hotel prices, especially vacation rentals, are high.
As the total visitors to Hawaii graph shows below, there is an uptick in March compared to January and February. On average, March is 10.7% more crowded than the surrounding months.

That is significant but not high enough for our family to notice the more crowded Waikiki streets, beaches with no place to sit, or restaurants with no seats available.
Maui and Oahu are the most popular islands to visit throughout the year, and spring break in Hawaii is no exception. Maui and Oahu have a more significant uptick in spring breakers compared to Kauai and the Big Island, especially Maui. See our Maui vs Oahu article to decide which one to visit!
Where to Stay for Spring Break
Hawaii’s resort areas are located on the leeward or dry side of the islands. While you can stay on the windward sides, like Hana on Maui and Turtle Bay on Oahu, we recommend sticking to the leeward resorts for your spring break.
As spring break is still in the winter season, you can minimize the chance of rain and enjoy good ocean conditions at your resort.

For our Hawaii spring breaks, we enjoy visiting Maui. Here is an example of how we book our lodging. We love staying in this Wailea vacation rental complex for most of our vacation. Things to Do on Your Hawaii Spring Break
Whale-watching is the first thing that comes to mind!
March is the end of humpback whale season, so you can see whales from the shore or have a close encounter on a whale-watching tour. In our activities section, we share all the whale-watching tours we have done in Hawaii.
If a luxurious resort doesn’t speak to you, go camping in Hawaii. Spring break is a great time for camping in Hawaii as it isn’t busy like summer, and it isn’t too hot like summer. Here is everything you need to know about camping on each island:

- Listen to spectacular performers and participate in educational programs at the Honolulu Festival in early March.

How Much is Spring Break in Hawaii? Costs
The most significant cost of a trip to Hawaii is lodging. We’ve seen Hawaii trip planners get sucked into a trip to Hawaii with an airline flash sale. Their jaw drops to see their vacation fund disappear when they book a hotel.

Lucky for you Hawaii spring breakers, hotel and vacation rental prices stay stable in March. Vacation rental rates drop about $10 from February to March.
Kauai shows a jump in hotel rates from February to March, while the other islands show lower prices than in the winter high season. However, the change is small, at $40 to $80 a night more in March, and is inconsistent yearly.
Studying the daily passenger arrivals, we noticed they are heaviest on Saturdays in March. Meanwhile, passenger arrivals are less pronounced day by day in other months.
The most dramatic changes in visitor arrivals are in early March. There is a difference of over 10,000 passengers from early in the week to Saturday. This stabilizes a bit by the end of April.
With higher demand, dynamic pricing kicks in. You should expect to find more expensive airline tickets for Saturday departures. You may also see more costly rental car rates for Saturday pick-ups.

Weather for Your Spring Break in Hawaii
Hawaii has two seasons: Summer and Winter. According to NOAA, summer is between May and October, and Winter is between October and April.
March falls firmly in the winter months. Therefore, you can expect more rainy days, high surf, strong currents, and lower temperatures compared to the summer months.
As Hawaii lies in the tropics, the difference between summer and winter is mild. We love visiting Hawaii during the winter months. We don’t plan to swim and snorkel on the islands’ north shores. Some days may be good to go, but statistically, it isn’t safe.
The average rainfall in the popular resort areas below shows an uptick in March. Personally, that wouldn’t make me shy away from spring break in Hawaii. Rainfalls are warm and usually quick. An all-week storm is rare compared to December, January, and February.
Average low temperatures in March are in the high 60s, usually at dawn. Evening temperatures are closer to the average highs of the mid-70s. The temperature graph below shows popular resort areas at sea level in Hawaii.
The average ocean temperature in March is 76.8 degrees Fahrenheit. As Hawaii leaves winter behind, the ocean temperature starts to warm up in March. Swimming with a wet suit is not needed in March.

- Car Rental: Book 6 to 12 months in advance. We recommend using Discount Hawaii Car Rental as there is no pre-payment, and they have competitive rates. We use them on almost every trip. Then, check rates 4 weeks before your trip to see if prices have dropped.
- Excursions: Four weeks in advance to get the date and time you want. Book that whale tour!
- Restaurants: If you have a unique restaurant in mind, book it three weeks in advance.
If you book at the last minute, that is totally fine. As spring break isn’t crazy busy, you will be able to take the tours you want and visit the restaurants that sound special to you.
