The price of a private tour can be a bit shocking. It is expensive. Since we travel to all the islands, their tour prices are a good deal for a group. The price is for the group, it’s not a per-person rate! On Maui, a private Road to Hana tour will cost about $375 per person. Per person! If you are with a group, then hiring a car and a tour guide for the day is worth the cost compared to buying individual tickets on a group tour like this volcanoes tour.
We’ve made several trips to the park independently, but when we went out with Joel, he elevated the experience like never before. He showed us around areas we’ve never been to, shared history on past and recent eruptions, pointed out features in the caldera (constantly changing!), and shared ancient Hawaiian stories from the Volcanoes National Park area.
Joel has since retired from private tours to focus on his new passion: Orchid Isle Chocolate. Scott is still providing tours so click the link below to see pictures from his tours, learn more, and book!
Scott runs Apau Hawaii Tours for up to 4 guests.
Nothing beats a local guide for Volcanoes National Park. Plus, if Kilauea is erupting, they will take you to the best viewing spots!
Park entry tickets are $30 per vehicle (prices subject to change). Click Volcanoes National Park for their official website on ticket prices and information on visiting the park.
We’ve visited both parks many times and have plenty of Tips for Visiting Hawaii’s National Parks. We also have a full guide to the park: How to Visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

We visited the caldera, steam vents, Thurston Lava Tube, and then you drove us down the Chain of Craters Road to the ocean. He shared wonderful stories the entire way and took us to places we had never visited.
