Shipwreck Beach is one of the most striking and interesting beaches on Kauai’s South Shore. Named for a ship that quite literally sank off its shores, Shipwreck Beach is best for sunbathing and swimming in the winter, and it’s a popular spot for surfers.
As this beach is located directly in front of the Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa at the end of the Poipu strip, it’s also typically more peaceful with few other beachgoers around.

Who is Shipwreck Beach Best For?
This is an excellent beach for anyone looking to escape the crowds. Poipu is one of the most popular places to stay on Kauai, so if you need space, you’ll find more here. Anyone looking for a nice hike will love the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail, which starts in Shipwreck Beach’s parking lot.
In the summer it’s great for advanced surfers as the large waves and short shore break requires skill to tackle.

Is Shipwreck Beach Good for Swimming?
As far as swimming goes, this is a great beach to visit in the winter. In contrast to Kauai’s North Shore beaches, Shipwreck Beach becomes dangerous in summer. You’ll want to avoid swimming here from May to September.

Is Shipwreck Beach Good for Cliff Jumping?
This is a well-known but dangerous spot for cliff jumping. I can hear my mother telling me, “So if your friends jumped off a cliff, would you?” Spoiler alert: You’re not supposed to say “yes.”
Adolescent defiance aside, we don’t recommend jumping from the 35-foot cliff (roughly three stories tall). Between the undercut cliff, large swells, swift currents, a rocky bottom, and no lifeguard, it’s a recipe for disaster. There are signs posted that jumping here can be deadly.

If you’re going to Kauai in the summer and looking to satisfy your ocean-jumping urge without as much risk, head to Hanalei. You can jump from the Hanalei Pier with an excellent running start and know you’re looked after by lifeguards on duty at Hanalei Bay.
Are There Visible Shipwrecks?
No, there aren’t any visible shipwrecks from the beach. Shipwreck Beach got its name when a wooden ship sunk in the area, but it’s long gone. Some sources claim that the YOGN-42 can be seen from the shore, but this shipwreck is off the coast of Lanai, not Kauai.
How To Get to Shipwreck Beach
Shipwreck Beach is located at the eastern end of the Poipu resort strip. It is 25 minutes from Lihue and an hour from Princeville. It’s a 30-minute walk from Poipu Beach along the walkway connecting the resorts.
Shipwreck Beach Parking
A small free parking lot next to the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort at the end of Ainakoa Street (click here for directions). Be sure not to go to the hotel parking lot, which is only free for guests of the hotel.
Things to Do at Shipwreck Beach
This is a great spot to watch the sunset or build a sandcastle. In the summer, the swells can be huge, sometimes making it difficult or even dangerous to swim. While it isn’t always a swimmer’s paradise, it is a beautiful spot to sunbathe in the silky, golden sand.
If you want to break a sweat before taking a refreshing dip, the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail begins in the parking lot and offers hikers breathtaking views from the cliffs. This trail makes our list of the best photoshoot spots in Hawaii.

If your trip is planned between December and March, Shipwreck Beach makes it onto our list of places for whale watching from the shore on Kauai. While Kauai doesn’t win the award for the best island for whale watching (that goes to Maui) keep a lookout for humpback whales in the distance while you enjoy the beach.

Shipwreck Beach Safety
Never underestimate the ocean, especially at this beach. Check conditions before going out, no matter what time of year, but stay out of the water here during the summer. We’ve already covered that cliff jumping is not a good idea. Remember there is no lifeguard on duty, so when in doubt, don’t go out!

Know Before You Go Snorkel Safety
Swimming and snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean should not be taken lightly. To keep you safe, please know your health limits, swim with a buddy, never turn your back on the ocean, and read and obey posted signs. Check HIOceanSafety.com for ocean conditions at lifeguard beaches.
Places to Eat Near Shipwreck Beach
The Grand Hyatt has several eateries including Tidepools, which is a lovely upscale restaurant set on their lagoon at the base of a manmade waterfall. Make reservations in advance if you want to eat at Tidepools.
You can also head along the walking path connecting all of the Poipu resorts to get to any other restaurants along the coast. Honorable mentions around the resorts include Red Salt and Little Fish. Head to Koloa Town or check out Kauai’s Food Trucks for more options!
