Most visitors book a surf lesson the second they land in Waikiki. We get it. We had an excellent surf lesson in Waikiki.

But if you are willing to make the drive up to the North Shore, and trust us, you should, you will trade the packed lineup and the assembly line group lessons for something that actually feels like the Hawaii you came for.

Uncrowded water, small forgiving waves, sea turtles cruising by, and an instructor who has spent her whole life in this ocean. That is exactly what you get with Sunset Suzy, and it is why we keep sending readers her way.

North Shore Surf Lessons map
Suzy has a secluded cove for most of her lessons. For intermediate lessons and depending on conditions, she will take you to other beaches.

What Makes These North Shore Surf Lessons Different

Here is what surprised us most: you barely see another person. While the surf schools down in Waikiki are running students out into a crowded break, Suzy takes you to one of her quieter spots, sometimes a little cove most people never find.

The waves there are small, slow, and beginner-friendly, which is the whole point. You are not fighting for space or dodging other boards. You are learning at your own pace with room to actually catch a wave.

Then there is Suzy herself. She was the only female lifeguard on the North Shore and had been teaching beginners for more than twenty-five years. That background matters more than you might think. She reads the ocean constantly, picks the right spot for the day’s conditions, and keeps a close eye on everyone in the water. We never once felt out of our depth, and even our kids were comfortable.

And we have to mention the dogs. Suzy’s golden retrievers come to the beach most days, and they are about the most welcoming greeting committee you could ask for.

The sea turtles are the other regulars. On the North Shore spot, they often pop up nearby while you are paddling, which is one of those Hawaii moments you do not forget.

North Shore Surf Lessons for Every Type of Visitor

One of the reasons we love recommending Suzy is that there is a lesson that fits almost anyone, whether you are traveling solo, bringing the whole family, or already know how to pop up and want to chase better waves. Here are the options.

Group Surf Lesson

Most Lessons are 2 hours long, and she takes her students to a beautiful, protected cove here on the North Shore with a great beginner wave. The waves break as small and gentle as in Waikiki.

This is the classic first-timer experience and a great value if you do not mind sharing the session with a few other people. You still get plenty of personal attention because Suzy keeps the ratio sensible, but the group setting makes it social and a little less intimidating. If it is your first time ever standing on a board, this is a fun, low-pressure way to do it.

The group size is 3 to 6 people. If your group is larger, she can accommodate it. The

Book the Group Lesson

Note: Group lessons must have at least 3 students per class. In the unlikely event that only one or two students are confirmed for a group lesson, Suzy will try to reschedule them into another group lesson time slot, or they can choose to pay an extra fee for a private or semi-private class.

Semi-Private Surf Lessons

If you want more coaching than a group lesson but do not need a full one-on-one session, this is the sweet spot. You share the lesson with one or two other people, often friends or family you are traveling with, while still getting close, hands-on instruction.

We think this is the best balance of value and attention for most couples and pairs of friends.

Book Semi-Private Lesson

Private Surf Lessons

Want the most attention possible in your limited vacation time? A private lesson gives you Suzy or one of her instructors entirely to yourself. They meet you exactly where you are, whether that means getting you to your feet for the very first time or fine-tuning your technique. If you only have one shot at this and want to make it count, go private.

Private Family Surf Lessons

This one is a favorite for good reason. A private family lesson keeps your group together, moves at a pace that works for everyone from the keiki to the grandparents, and lets the instructor adjust on the fly so each person gets the support they need. We have heard from readers who surfed three generations at once on a single morning, and everyone got up on a wave. That kind of memory is hard to beat.

Intermediate Surf Tours

Already comfortable popping up and catching small waves? The intermediate surf tour is built for you. Instead of starting from scratch, Suzy takes you to spots that match your skill level and the day’s conditions and helps you progress, whether that is reading waves better, improving your paddle, or working toward a steeper face.

It is part lesson, part guided session at the kind of breaks most visitors never find on their own.

Why We Recommend Sunset Suzy for North Shore Surf Lessons

We point readers only to operators we genuinely trust, and Suzy checks every box for us. She is a local, woman-owned small business run by someone with decades of real ocean experience. That matters to us, and we think it will matter to you too.

The lessons are also as inclusive as they get. We have seen Suzy work with little kids, anxious first-timers, older travelers, and people who were sure they would never get up, and she has a way of getting almost everyone standing.

The small, gentle waves at her spots take a lot of the fear out of it. Add in the safety net of a former lifeguard reading the water the entire time, and it is an easy recommendation for nervous beginners and confident surfers alike.

If you are already planning to spend a day exploring the North Shore, and you should, a morning lesson with Suzy slots in perfectly before lunch in Haleiwa and an afternoon of beach hopping.

Frequently Asked Questions About North Shore Surf Lessons

Do I need any experience to take a lesson?

Not at all. The group, semi-private, private, and family lessons are all designed for complete beginners. If you have surfed before and want a challenge, the intermediate surf tour is the better fit.

Where do the lessons actually take place?

Suzy teaches at uncrowded spots on the North Shore and on the quieter east side of Oahu, including a beautiful beach near where Jurassic Park was filmed. She chooses the spot based on the day’s conditions and your skill level, so you are always learning where the waves are safest and most forgiving. You will get the exact meeting location when you book.

What should I wear and bring?

Wear a swimsuit you can move in, and bring reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, water, and a change of clothes. Suzy provides the board, a rash guard, and reef booties or water shoes, so you really just need to show up ready to get in the water.

Is it safe for kids and older adults?

Yes. This is one of the things Suzy is known for. The small-wave spots, the low student-to-instructor ratios, and her lifeguard background make this a comfortable choice for keiki and grandparents. Family groups of all ages do this together all the time.

How far is the drive from Waikiki?

Plan on roughly an hour to an hour and a half each way, depending on traffic and which spot you are meeting at. It is a gorgeous drive, and honestly, the scenery is part of the experience. We recommend pairing it with a full day on that side of the island so the drive earns its keep.

Will I really be able to stand up on my first lesson?

There are no guarantees in the ocean, but many of Suzy’s students are up and riding in their very first session, often within the first handful of waves. The gentle waves and patient coaching are built to make that happen.

When is the best time to book?

Mornings tend to have the cleanest, calmest conditions, and they fill up fast, especially in peak season. We suggest booking your lesson as soon as you know your dates so you can lock in a morning slot.

What is the cancellation policy?

Customers will receive a full refund or credit with 24 hours’ notice of cancellation. Customers will also receive a full refund or credit if the operator cancels due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. No-shows will be charged the full price.

About Sunset Suzy

Sunset Suzy is the real deal. She caught her first wave at Waikiki at fifteen, became the only female lifeguard on the North Shore, and has spent more than twenty-five years teaching beginners how to surf safely in Hawaii. Along the way, she played a surfer girl in the movie Blue Crush and worked as a stunt woman for Baywatch Hawaii, so the ocean has been her life in just about every way you can imagine.

What comes through most when you meet her is how much she cares about doing this right. With all of her lifeguard training, she knows how to teach ocean safety, where the safe small-wave coves are, even when the famous winter breaks are roaring, and how to make the whole thing fun and confidence-building rather than scary. Her golden retrievers are with her most days, and the sea turtles at her North Shore spot are a regular bonus.

When you book with Suzy, you are supporting a local, woman-owned business run by someone who genuinely wants you to fall in love with the ocean. That is the kind of operator we are proud to send our readers to.

We are affiliate partners with Sunset Suzy’s Surf School, which means we receive a small commission for each completed booking made through this site. This is done without any additional cost to you. You can read more about our affiliate policies here. Know that we only recommend tour operators that we know and trust.
