Before my husband and I had a child, we were pros at the one-day trip to Hana. We’d hit the road by 6:30 AM, stop for breakfast in Paia, and make as many Road to Hana stops as we liked before driving home. Now, with kids, driving the Road to Hana isn’t as efficient. Staying one night is ideal for our Road to Hana trips.
After numerous overnight stays, here is our complete list of where to stay in Hana, Maui for one night with our reviews and ways to save.
Where to Stay in Hana Maui for One Night, listed from most luxurious to camping. As is a Hana tradition, having A/C or TVs in the rooms is not customary.
- Hana-Maui Resort by Hyatt is the only hotel in Hana. It is part of the community. The resort looks dated in places, and the rooms do not have A/C, but it is still a charming place to stay with two pools and a wellness center. Read our full Hana Maui Review or look below for details. You will have a TV in your room, the one Hana exception.
- Hana Kai Maui offers oceanfront vacation rentals. Choose from studio, one-, or two-bedroom rentals. The location is excellent in central Hana—walk to the beach or to the food trucks!
- Hana Inn (formerly Joe’s Place) was remodeled in 2020. The exterior is rustic Hawaiian, while the interior has modern rooms with new furnishings. Each room has exclusive access to a bathroom, and ocean views are available.
- Bamboo Inn on Hana Bay is a vintage place featuring three suites that overlook Hana Bay. One suite can accommodate six guests. Bamboo Inn has an eco-vacation vibe with a longtime proprietor who provides a unique, Hana-Hawaii experience.
- Waiʻānapanapa State Park Cabins are charming green cabins located within the park that has the famous black sand beach of Hana. The cabins have kitchens and bedrooms with bunks. Bring your own linens and food, and enjoy a lovely camping experience. The cabins sell out fast, so book early!
- Tent camping is available in Waiʻānapanapa State Park and Haleakala’s Kipahulu District. Permits are required, and they do sell out fast. See our Maui Camping article for details.
Staying the night in Hana is a great way to see more sights. My favorite Road to Hana stops are past Hana! We still do the Road to Hana in one day, but if we can find a reasonable price, we prefer to stay the night in Hana.

The Hana-Maui Resort, Hana Kai Maui, Bamboo Inn, and Hana Inn are all located on or near Hana Bay.
You can walk four minutes to Hana Bay for a swim or 15 minutes to Hasegawa General Store, Hana Food Trucks, and Hana Ranch Restaurant.

Where to Stay in Hana Maui for One Night
Finding a place to stay in Hana can be tricky. The options are limited, lodging can feel expensive for what you get, and hotels can sell out during the summer busy season.
If you plan on staying the night in Hana, we recommend booking a place to stay ASAP.
Maui is known for its luxury accommodations, like those in Wailea and Kaanapali. Hence, I find Hana’s hotel and condo options to be a welcome respite.
You can have a vintage, eco-friendly stay in Hana. The Hana community prides itself on being connected to the ‘aina (land) and the water. Staying in the sleepy town overnight is an experience you won’t find anywhere else on Maui.

Hana-Maui Resort by Hyatt
A beautiful resort to break up the Road to Hana journey, and a great option for booking with points! We stayed for free using reward points.
While the Hana Maui may feel dated, it lacks the luster of its heyday as the Travasa Resort, it is a charming place, and the best place to stay in Hana. Another drawback is that the rooms don’t have A/C. During July and August, the fans might not cut it for you.
It’s quiet, centrally located in Hana, oceanfront, and offers all the amenities you’d expect in a resort. The resort offers bungalows, suites, and villas, which provide a serene escape.

While you can stay at this resort for one night, staying so short would be a shame. The luxury grounds and amenities make it the perfect place to escape from the more crowded areas of Maui. Maui honeymooners should consider a few nights here!
Compared to others on Maui, it’s a small resort with 66 rooms spread over 75 acres of beautiful land with ocean views. Amenities include resort bikes, tennis courts, daily yoga classes, a fitness center, and two pools.
Expect to pay $600 or more per night at the Hana Maui. As I mentioned, we used reward points to book a free night. Here is our free guide on using points for Hawaii hotels.
The pool overlooking the ocean was the highlight of our stay. After so much time in the car and making the kids go on short hikes (they love it, regardless of what they say), the pool was a welcome break. Hana-Maui’s pool has a bar and poolside service for drinks and snacks. Plus, we could walk to food trucks for dinner and the Hana Ranch Restaurant. We ended up doing both!

Hana Kai Maui
The Hana Kai Maui is a vacation rental property located on the ocean in Hana. It offers studios to two-bedroom units with fully equipped kitchens.
We find the Hana Kai Maui the second nicest place to stay in Hana. You can expect a clean condo with modern conveniences. You won’t find A/C and TVs in the condos, but you can enjoy a private lanai, oceanfront views, sunrises, and the serenity of Hana Town.
The Hana Kai Maui is located on Waikoloa Beach, on Hana Bay. You can walk to Hana Bay Beach Park. It is a 15-minute walk to the Hana food truck park and to Hana Ranch Restaurant.

They have 17 rooms, ranging in price from $250 for a studio to over $500 for a two-bedroom. Prices are dynamic, so check below for rates. You can book the condo you like as they provide pictures and a write-up on each unit.
They have a $25 nightly resort fee for parking, Wi-Fi, amenities, and eco wastewater management.
They offer discounts for booking more than one night.

Hana Inn
The Hana Inn is located across the street from the Hana Kai Maui. Both are in a residential community, as Hana is small and hotels are limited.
The Hana Inn was built at Joe’s Place in 1923. As of 2018, the new owners have remodeled the rooms to provide modern amenities and bathrooms for each room. The hotel blends into the residential street as it looks like a large, Hana house.
Visitors are booked into the upstairs rooms as they are more comfortable, have an ocean view, and have exclusive bathrooms. Locals have the option to reserve the ground-floor units.

You have access to an outdoor BBQ grill, rooms have a mini fridge, the common kitchen has a full-size fridge, microwave, electric kettle, stove, and oven.
Rooms rent for $150 to $315, depending on their size.
Hana Inn offers discounts for stays of over three nights.

Bamboo Inn
This ocean-front B&B offers two studio rentals and two one-bedroom rentals. The proprietor has owned the property since the late 1990s. He has been fixing it up over the years, hence the reviews reflect changes from a rough place to stay to a cleaner, more convenient place.
The shared outdoor space and only having three rooms, makes the Hana B&B a charming and eco-friendly option. Rustic but comfortable is the main takeaway. Come for the views, fresh, local fruit for breakfast, and a bed to lay your head after a big day on the Road to Hana.
Suite prices are subject to change but you can expect to pay $285, $325, and $395 per night.
Book a room at the Bamboo Inn.
Waiʻānapanapa State Park Cabins
In Waiʻānapanapa State Park, you’ll find these no-frills but well-maintained cabins. We enjoyed these comfortable, yet rustic cabins for their cleanliness and being located away from the other state park visitors. They were quiet, great for a BBQ, and provided jungle and ocean views.
The cabins come with bunk beds, a full bathroom, a kitchen, a living room, and a lanai. But, they’re not full service. You’ll need to bring your own linens and blankets. During our stay in August, the cabin started off hot and cooled down dramatically at night. You will need blankets!

These cabins are popular and book up far in advance, so if you want to stay there, start planning early. While these cabins technically have a two-night minimum, if only one night is available for a cabin, you can book a single night. That’s how we could spend just one night there on our most recent trip (though you could easily spend two nights there, happily).
Waiʻānapanapa State Park has plenty to see, including a black sand beach. A plus of staying overnight is you can hit the beach early before anyone else is up.

Tent Camping Near Hana
The closest thing we have done to camping on the Road to Hana is camping in a Volkswagen van in Hana. It was one of our favorite trips to Hana. See our video below.
While the campsite we parked the van at isn’t available anymore, tent and van camping sites are open and available for you to pick from for one night in Hana.
Waianapanapa State Park and Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park provide overnight camping permits. Tent and van camping sites have showers and restroom facilities. This will be your least expensive option for where to stay in Hana Maui for one night.
If you’re looking to visit Kipahulu District, read our tips for Visiting Hawaii’s National Parks.
See our Maui Camping for information on permits.

How Long is the Road to Hana?
The Hana Highway is only 64.4 miles. Sounds easy, right? Well, not when you factor in over 600 hairpin turns and 59 one-lane bridges plus a number of can’t miss stops, you’re looking at a long drive. A good estimate is that the drive will take 5-6 hours one way. Factor in more time if you have young kids or want to take in the stops without feeling rushed.
The way back should theoretically take less time without the stops, but you’ll find that the traffic on the road later in the day can be a little challenging.
If you plan to do the entire trip in one day, estimate that you’ll spend approximately 10-12 hours on the road that day.

Is It Worth Staying in Hana?
After the long journey to Hana, gearing yourself up to drive back to your hotel can feel exhausting. A one-night stay is worth it. It allows you not to feel rushed on your journey, and you can make as many stops as you want. Plus, you get the chance to do activities on the route home, like the Pipiwai Trail or the ‘Ohe’o Gulch.
And lastly, a night stay in Hana is quiet and peaceful. Maui can feel crowded, especially in the high season. But Hana never feels crowded in the evenings once most day-trippers leave. It’s a night of peaceful relaxation that you won’t find on other parts of the island.
