When we lived in Hawaii, we lived a short walk away from a very popular Oahu luau. Whenever visitors were in town, we’d book tickets, head over, and enjoy the buffet food and mai tais. Since then, we’ve learned a lot about luaus and have seen firsthand the varying levels of quality and experience you can receive. 

From all-you-can-eat buffets and cash bars to authentic cultural performances and immersive storytelling, not all luaus are created equal. That’s why we’ve put together this honest, experience-based guide to the top luaus on Oahu—to help you choose one that’s truly worth your time and money.

Ka Moana Luau at the Aloha Tower is conveniently located near Waikiki but provides more space and an oceanfront setting than Waikiki luaus. Plus, it’s reasonably priced!
Chief’s Luau on the west side, 10 minutes from Ko Olina resorts. This Oahu luau is known for the fire knife dancing, not so much for the food.

We will start with the best show located on Oahu’s North Shore in Waimea Valley. Then, we will take you around the island for the best luaus on Oahu.

Toa Luau for an Authentic Hawaiian Luau

Toa Luau has become one of the best luaus on Oahu. And a great price. Located in Waimea Valley on Oahu’s north shore, you can experience fun Hawaiian activities like games and coconut husking, and then sit back for the excellent show and good food. This luau is good for families as they have a 1:00 PM show so you can get back to Waikiki before bedtime.

We loved this luau. The performers were excellent and so full of joy! It made the luau so much fun. And the food was fantastic (the chicken was excellent!). No buffet here! Each plate of food was delivered to the table and I honestly think they might serve the best luau food I’ve had.

Toa Luau wins our award for the most authentic Hawaiian luau experience on Oahu. The luau feels authentic due to its location in Waimea Valley, surrounded by taro fields and Hawaiian hale (houses), the activities and demonstrations, and for the energy of the performers.

I also appreciate that the tickets are a good value. Yes, luaus are expensive, but this felt well-priced for the show’s quality and meal.

Choose from three luau packages and show times (12:30 PM and 5 PM). Tickets include drink tickets and a cash bar. The venue is small, so there are not bad seats, in our opinion.

We sat in the Gold Seating on the bottom level, close to the stage. The Silver Seating is behind the Gold but raised for a good view.

Highlights include:

• Entrance to Waimea Valley Botanical Garden and a waterfall swim included
• Kava ceremony (traditional Polynesian drink)

Why we love it: Waimea Valley waterfall swim and gardens alone is worth a visit. The activities and Polynesian show make this one a lot of fun for the family. Plus, the food is excellent and it was just so fun.

If you search for a luau on Oahu, the first one that always gets mentioned is the Polynesian Cultural Center. It’s a popular favorite for a reason. This isn’t just a luau, it’s a full-day experience. 

This luau wins our award for the best family-friendly luau on Oahu.

You can spend the day enjoying activities in the six Polynesian Island villages. While the Ali’i luau is wonderful, we award this luau the second most authentic Hawaiian luau experience on Oahu. Toa Laua felt so authentic!

The luau packages get a little confusing (at least for us at first). Below is an overview of the areas and events at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Hukilau Marketplace is a dining and shopping area at the front of the Polynesian Cultural Center. Entrance is free and a reservation is not required. 

The Gateway Buffet is a dinner package but does not include a luau show. Open from 4:30 to 7:00 PM, the buffet is served in a large hall. The feast includes traditional luau food, but no luau dinner show like traditional dancing and storytelling.

The Aliʻi Luau is a traditional all-you-can-eat luau buffet. While you dine, the MC tells stories of Hawaii with live music and dancing. This is their most popular luau experience.

HA: Breath of Life is the big evening spectacular after the Ali’i Luau or Gateway Buffet. Sit in a large auditorium for a theatrical show of lights, dancing, and singing.  

You can purchase ticket packages that combine these events. The most popular is the all-day experience of the Polynesian Island Villages, Ali’i Luau, and ending the day with HA: Breath of Life show.

The full-day event goes late, so do what is best for your family, as you will still have a long drive back to your resort on the other side of the island. 

Highlights:

• A full day of activities in six different Polynesian Island villages (ex: basket making, making fire, bow and arrow shooting, getting a fake tattoo, so many more)
• A separate luau and buffet dinner with a flower lei greeting. The food is quite good

Why we love it: We were skeptical when we first arrived (it can feel a little like Disneyland), but this was truly an immersive day. You can spend the entire afternoon enjoying cultural activities and then opt to stay for the luau and evening show. The food is great and plentiful, the dancers are incredible, and everyone is exceptionally friendly!

Drinks at Oahu Luaus: Expect your Oahu luau ticket to include complimentary drink tickets and a cash bar.
The PCC luau is a dry affair, as the luau is owned and operated by The Church of Latter-day Saints. At other Oahu luaus, you will find beer and cocktails available. It is rare to find an open bar at an Oahu luau, while it is rare to see a cash bar at a Maui luau. Even a luxury luau like The Royal Hawaiian provides drink tickets.

Chief’s Luau for the Fire-Knife Show

Are you looking for an Oahu luau with fire dancing? All the luaus on this list offer that, but Chief’s Luau is known for its show.

This is the big fire dancing show on Oahu by World Fire Knife Dancer Chief Sielu. Chief’s Luau is popular for the entertaining MC. Laughs, Samoan fire-knife dancing, and Polynesian dancing are all top-notch in this Polynesian show.

This luau has the drawback of being located 45 minutes west of Waikiki at a waterpark. But transportation options are available from Waikiki. Don’t let the waterpark scene ruin your experience. The food is also not as good as other Oahu luaus.

Why we love it: This luau is a fan favorite because of its production quality. It is one of the few luaus where the jokes and storytelling are as entertaining as the Polynesian show.

Queens Waikiki Luau: Best Price

This is a solid recommendation for anyone who wants to experience a luau without having to leave Waikiki. While it’s not a luxury luau (it’s located in the middle of the International Marketplace Mall), the price reflects that.

But the service, entertainment, and experience are excellent. 

Plus, you can upgrade to front-row seats to be closer to the action or get a better deal by choosing a table in the back. You won’t get a sunset view but will have a great night in Waikiki.

• Convenient location in the middle of Waikiki at the International Marketplace
• 3 ticket levels based on seating location, number of drinks included, and lei type
• Fire-knife dancing

Why we like it: If you are looking for a budget-friendly luau option without leaving Waikiki, this is the one for you. Plus, you usually don’t have to book out weeks or months in advance as you do with many of the other luaus in Hawaii.

Ka Moana Luau at Aloha Tower: Honolulu Luau

Ka Moana Luau is reasonably priced and located near Historic Honolulu. Aloha Tower is the historic cruise terminal that would welcome visitors from around the world. It is 15-20 minutes from central Waikiki, making it a quick Uber or Taxi ride away.

We like this luau for its reasonable price (only a few dollars more than Queens Luau), delicious, locally sourced luau food (Western and Hawaiian options), and oceanfront location under the Aloha Tower.

Book the ticket class that works for you! The ticket options offer a range of seating locations, buffet vs. table service, lei greeting, and drink tickets. We like their flexibility.

Highlights:

• It is conveniently located near Waikiki in the historic Aloha Tower. The oceanfront location and locally sourced food are a perk!
• There are three ticket levels based on seating location, the number of drinks included, lei type, and more. Click the booking button for more details!
• Fire-knife dancing and activities

Why we like it: This is a perfect luau for your first time to Hawaii or your first Hawaii luau. The venue is large but not theater-like, it is conveniently located near Waikiki, and the ticket levels make it convenient to book. With daily shows, it isn’t hard to get tickets, but we do recommend booking early to get a seat closer to the front.

• Location: Aloha Tower in Honolulu
• Length: 2.5 hours
• Days: Daily
• Price: starting at $116

Experience Nutridge Luau

This luau is set near the Tantulus Lookout, about 25 minutes outside of Waikiki. This show is unique in its much more intimate setting than many other luaus. They pride themselves on having an interactive and hands-on experience that ignites all the senses. Plus, with limited group sizes, every seat is a great one!

We loved the stunning setting of this luau—you are on the side of the mountain, and everything is lush and green, and the views are stunning.

The luau show was different, in a wonderful way. It was intimate and small (with just a handful of dancers), and the entertainment was woven into the evening. The MC made us laugh, and so did the performers.

As there was a small group in attendance and performers, it felt like you got to know folks by the end of the night. That may have been the Mai Tais, though.

You can opt for transportation from Waikiki for an additional cost.

Highlights:

• More intimate setting with about half the number of guests compared to other luaus. We had 45 in attendance during our luau.
• Fire-knife dancing
• Kukui nut lei greeting
• Farm to table dinner
• The intimate setting makes this a family-friendly luau on Oahu

Why we like it: It’s in a great location near the Tantalus Lookout! You can spend an afternoon picnicking at the lookout before heading to the luau for the show and dinner. Our friend Ryan over at Mahina Hawaii highly recommends this luau, and our newsletter readers loved it as well!

The luau did not disappoint. Jordan’s parents joined us, and they loved it, too. The final dinner show dancing was high energy, and you got a front-row seat as it is such a small venue!

Best Oahu Luaus: Honorable Mentions

These Oahu luaus are worth checking out if our list above did not entice you! Here are our honorable mentions for the best luaus on Oahu.

1. The Royal Hawaiian Resort’s Aha’aina Luau is a luxury luau on the beach. Enjoy table service, a great show, and an incredible sunset view. The luau is on the lawn in front of the Royal Hawaiian in central Waikiki, beachfront. Choose from Standard Seating or Premium Seating.

2. Mauka Warrior Luau is located on the West Side, in Kapolei at Coral Gardens Adventure Park. We attended this luau at their previous location. The performers and the MC were the best parts. The food wasn’t great nor was the location, but maybe this new location is better! It is a well priced luau with Rear Seating starting at $150 per adult. 3. Experience Kilohana Luau is a free hula show in Waikiki! Free hula shows are weekly at the Kuhio Hula Mound (directions) on Waikiki Beach. Kilohana puts on a great show on Monday through Wednesday at 9 AM.

Free Oahu Hula Shows

Oahu has the largest selection of free hula shows in the Hawaiian Islands. These are not free luaus, but they are a free, entertaining, and authentic hula shows.

A free hula show might be all you need to experience the beauty Hawaiian mele (music) and hula (dance and storytelling).

I mentioned the Experience Kilohana Luau above. While it is named a luau, it is a hula show with a wonderful MC. There are more free shows to find on Oahu.

Free hula shows can be found at the major shopping centers in Honolulu and on the Kuhio Hula Mound on Waikiki Beach. Here are details on free Oahu hula shows:

• Royal Hawaiian Center at the Royal Grove has four weekly shows, usually 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Sit under the palm trees for hula and music by different groups. This is a simple stop while you’re in Waikiki. We stop to watch a show on every trip to Waikiki.
• International Marketplace in Waikiki has the Queens Waikiki Luau we mentioned above and a free hula show on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during the summer months.
• Ala Moana Center, just outside of Waikiki (the largest shopping center in Hawaii) has a free hula show every day at 6 PM on the Centerstage. We have not been to this show, but Ala Moana is known for its events.
• Kuhio Beach Hula Mound on Waikiki Beach has four free hula shows weekly! This is the place to go for a full production hula show. The live bands are excellent, the MCs are fun, and the crowd is there for a good time. Shows start around sunset (6:30 PM or so). Get there early to get a seat on the ground under the Banyan Tree. Nightly shows are Tues, Wed, and Saturday. The Kilohana show is at 9 AM Mon – Wed.

Oahu Luau FAQs

Are the luaus outside?

Most Oahu luaus are covered. Chief’s Luau isn’t covered but the others on this list are for the dining experience. 

Rain or shine, the luaus will go on. If the rains come, they will continue with the show, so be mentally prepared. They do their best to keep you comfortable.

Are luaus worth it on Oahui?

It depends on your expectations. Luau can be a great experience that is a memorable part of your vacation. Or, they can be a disappointment and something you wish you hadn’t done. But the key is to know what you expect and what you’ll enjoy.

If you go to Vegas for the shows, then a luau is up your alley, so find your type and book early! If you’re not worried about the price and want just to enjoy an evening show, you’ll probably love a luau.

But if you’re on the fence, here are some reasons most people feel disappointed. 

• The high price.
• They expect that the food will be better. But these luaus cater to 100+ people, often buffet style, and include traditional Hawaiian dishes, so this probably won’t be your best meal on the island. 

If you expect a gourmet meal for the steep cost and you don’t care as much about the entertainment, a luau might not be the right activity for you. But don’t worry, we’ve included some alternatives below. 

What is the best family-friendly luau on Oahu?

While all luaus on Oahu are family-friendly, one stands out. The Polynesian Cultural Center Luau is made for families (except no private nursing locations) and offers an educational experience through Polynesia and luau storytelling. Children dance in the luau, and they get the kids in the audience to participate. 

FYI, no alcohol is served at the Polynesian Cultural Center. 

Is it better to go to a luau on the Big Island or Oahu?

While both islands have fantastic luaus, going to a luau on the Big Island is a better option if given the choice. You can find a good luau conveniently located near your vacation rental or resort, so you don’t have to travel too far. 

While Oahu has excellent luaus, some of the best are located away from where most people stay, so you’ll have to spend extra time and effort to get to and from your luau. For example, Toa Luau is incredible, but it’s located on the north shore of the island. If you’re staying in Waikiki, the drive to the luau will take you approximately an hour. Same with the Polynesian Cultural Center, it is located on the North Shore so it is 60-minutes away.

What to expect at a luau?

A luau has two main components: the feast and the entertainment. Most luaus follow the same format, which includes arrival and pre-show entertainment, a dinner (buffet, family style, or plated), and then the main luau show. Luaus typically last 2-3 hours, though the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu is a full-day affair. 

What is traditional Oahu luau food?

Luau food includes traditional Polynesian canoe crops and new dishes brought by missionaries, whalers, and plantation workers from all over the world. For example, a luau will always include poke, poi, kalua pork, Lomi lomi salmon, and lau lau. Learn more here about these dishes.

What to expect for the luau entertainment

On the entertainment front, most luaus feature dancing from a mix of Polynesian islands. Fire-knife dancing is a Samoan tradition, not Hawaiian. It is fun to see the various dances from each Polynesian nation. But some luaus, like the Old Lahaina Luau on Maui, are strictly Hawaiian in dancing, food, and storytelling.

Oahu Luau Booking Tips

I recommend booking an Oahu luau at least four weeks in advance during the busy summer months of June through August. For popular luaus, like the ones on this list, you may need to book earlier to get the date you want.

The Polynesian Culture Center can sell out six weeks in advance during the summer!

You can book a luau two to three weeks in advance during the shoulder seasons and winter. As luau prices do not change with demand, we recommend booking a luau as soon as you know you want to attend. Then, you don’t have to stress about getting into your favorite luau.

Here are traits to pay attention to when booking an Oahu luau:

• Price – luaus range from $115 to $280 plus taxes and fees. Most luaus will cost you $180 per person. Prices have increased this year.
• Fire Knife Dancing—Lucky for you, all these Oahu luaus include fire knife dancing. It is common on Oahu to have Polynesian shows, not just Hawaiian luaus.
• Food: The more expensive luaus will offer table service, with some showcasing a chef’s skill. Larger luaus will offer buffet service.
• Drinks and Cocktails—In our experience, table-service luaus include an open bar with cocktails, beers, and wine. Large luaus will include drink tickets and a cash bar. Expect long lines at the bar for large luaus.
• Location—beachfront, sunset views, a small grass lawn at your resort, or an amphitheater performance at a luau venue are all possible locations.
• Activities include coconut husking, a hula lesson, lei making, spear throwing, and other cultural activities before or during the dinner show. The large luaus typically include fun activities for you and your kids.
