Is June a Good Time to go to Hawaii?
With great weather, moderate crowds, and decent pricing, June isn’t a bad month to go to Hawaii. While it’s not the best month (we give that award to September), there’s something special about spending part of your June on the islands.
Reasons to Go to Hawaii in June
June is a popular month to go to Hawaii. The weather is typically warm and dry, and the ocean is the perfect temperature for all sorts of water activities.
June is a good choice if you’re looking for summer fun without as much of a crowd. Fewer people visit Hawaii this month than in July.
And since there aren’t as many people, you won’t pay quite as much for your hotel rooms. This means you’ll spend less money than you would if you came in July.

Reasons Not to Go to Hawaii in June
While June is a good time of year for a Hawaiian getaway, there are some downsides. June is the beginning of hurricane season here. And though these powerful storms are rare, they are possible.
Also, June crowds are smaller than those in July or December. But there are still many people enjoying everything the state has to offer. You’ll find significantly smaller crowds in May or September.
Is Hawaii Nice in June: Weather Data
Now that you know some reasons to go (or not go) to Hawaii in June, let’s dive into the data. That way, you can decide if a June trip suits you.
The average high and low temperatures in June are less than five degrees apart. This means the weather will be incredibly consistent throughout your stay. You should have blue skies and lots of sunshine, especially since the state gets less than an inch of rain on average this month.
Is Hawaii Rainy in June?
Hawaii is in the tropics. It has only two seasons, a wetter winter and a drier summer. Winter runs from October through April, and summer is from May through October. Since June is in the summer, you’ll experience less rain than if you went in February or another winter month.
June is historically the third driest month of the year, slightly behind July and September. The average rainfall this month is just under an inch of rain.
However, the amount of rain you may encounter depends significantly on your destination.
The windward side of each island receives much more rainfall than the leeward. That’s because the trade winds force the rain-bearing clouds up the mountains. So plan accordingly if you’re heading to the windward side during your visit. Towns like Hilo, Hana, and Kaneohe get more rain than those on the leeward side.
This image shows the breakdown between the windward and leeward sides:
Now, let’s look at some weather data for four locations across the islands. These towns are all on the leeward side, but it’ll give you a better idea of how much rain Hawaii gets in June.
Location | Average Rainfall in June (in Inches) |
Poipu. Kauai | 1.85 |
Honolulu, Oahu | 1.295 |
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii | 1.0 |
Kihei, Maui | 0.2 |
Poipu, Kauai is the wettest destination on this list. If you’re planning a trip to Kauai and want to minimize your chances of raindrops, April and September are the driest months there. But you’re still talking about very little rain!
In June, Kihei, Maui is your best bet for avoiding rain altogether. With only 0.2 inches throughout the month, you’ll enjoy sunny skies and blue waters.
While July is the driest month, with an average of only 0.88 inches of rain across the above locations, June isn’t far behind at 0.99 inches.
If it rains in June, it will likely be a quick shower instead of an all day downpour. The rain tends to stop pretty quickly throughout the summer. If you do happen to get stuck with some rainy weather, we have a great list of things to do in Hawaii when it rains.
During the summer months we love to stay on the windward sides of the islands, especially north shore Oahu or Kauai. You get to enjoy the lush scenery with mostly blue skies.
Here, you can see the average rainfall throughout the year.
How Warm Is It in Hawaii in June?
When you think about Hawaii, what mental picture do you paint? Chances are pretty good you just saw warm, sunny days and beautiful beaches in your mind. In June, those picturesque days are a reality.
The average high temperature in June is just over 80°F. You’ll want to spend time on the Big Island for the hottest days, the temperatures there average 85°F. Maui and Kauai have lower averages, both at 78°F. However, this is plenty warm to enjoy everything Hawaii has to offer.
This chart dives into the data better, so you can see the average highs and lows across four different locations:
Location | Average High Temperature (°F) | Average Low Temperature (°F) |
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii | 85 | 74 |
Kihei, Maui | 78 | 75 |
Poipu, Kauai | 78 | 74 |
Honolulu, Oahu | 80 | 74 |
The low temperatures are very consistent throughout the islands, though Kihei, Maui is slightly higher.
If you’re worried about it being too warm, you’ll want to visit in February or March, the coldest months of the year. But truly, the tropical climate keeps Hawaii from dropping below the 70s even in the middle of winter. So there’s never a terrible time to visit temperature-wise.
You can use the data in these next two graphs to see the highs and lows throughout the year. That way, you can pinpoint which month would be best for your visit based on how warm you’d like it to be.
Can You Swim in Hawaii in June?
Yes, you can swim in Hawaii in June. Actually, since the Pacific Ocean stays relatively consistent year-round, there’s never a month when you can’t safely swim in the waters due to temperature. It’s almost always between 76-81 degrees, which is perfect for swimming and all sorts of other water adventures.
The waters are the warmest in September and October. They’re coolest in the early months of the year, January through April.
This graph shows the temperature fluctuations throughout the year:
June Ocean Conditions in Hawaii
Before stepping foot in the fierce Pacific Ocean, it’s essential to check the conditions. The lifeguards use flags to indicate the amount of rip current, so it’s easy to know if the beaches are safe to swim in.
In June, the ocean is relatively calm. You can expect little to no wind on most days, which keeps the waves low and the waters crystal clear. This makes for perfect conditions for snorkeling or paddleboarding!
June is also one of the best times to spot turtles and other sea life. The high temperatures draw out more marine life into the shallow waters, so you’ll likely see a few if you go out exploring.

Before you come to Hawaii in June, it’s important to understand that it is the beginning of hurricane season. This season runs from June through November each year.
And while destructive hurricanes are rare in the state, you should be prepared just in case. You’ll want to check with your hotel about emergency procedures and ensure someone back home knows where you’ll be staying.
The American Red Cross has emergency cards and recommends you fill one out for each person you’re traveling with. That way, everyone in your party has emergency contact information on hand.
How Busy is Hawaii in June?
June is a fairly busy month in Hawaii, especially the last two weeks of the month after school is out. It’s not quite as crowded as July or December, but it’s certainly not as slow as January or September.
This chart can help you see how crowded the state is from month to month. We’re using 2022 numbers until we have the data for the full year of 2023. Instead of the months being listed in chronological order, you’ll find them listed with the busiest month on top and the slowest on the bottom.
Month | Number of Total Visitors in 2022 |
July | 919,154 |
December | 871,870 |
June | 841,809 |
August | 829,669 |
April | 809,612 |
March | 785,715 |
May | 774,144 |
October | 726,059 |
November | 725,469 |
September | 691,794 |
February | 623,691 |
January | 567,179 |
In June 2022, 841,809 people traveled to Hawaii. And while that’s a lot of visitors, it’s over 100,000 fewer people than in 2019. Travel hasn’t quite reached its pre-pandemic levels, but the numbers are rising, and June 2023 saw 886,038.
When discussing how active a particular month is in Hawaii, it’s also important to cover the average daily census. This number shows how many people were on the islands on any given day in that month. In June 2023, the daily census was 236,529. In June 2019, it was 279,305.
Here’s a graph with both the average daily census and the total number of visitors in 2022:
Which Hawaiian Islands Are the Busiest in June?
No matter what time of year you visit, Molokai and Lanai are the quietest of the islands. However, of the main four islands, Kauai and the Big Island get less traffic than Maui and Oahu.
Here’s a chart with your monthly visitor numbers:
Island | Number of Visitors in June 2022 |
Molokai | 3,549 |
Lanai | 6,082 |
Kauai | 133,517 |
The Big Island | 157,443 |
Maui | 288,333 |
Oahu | 437,769 |
Oahu is the most visited of all the islands, so you’ll encounter more people there all year round. However, if you have your heart seat on an Oahu vacation but want as much space as possible, January or February are the slowest.
This graph shows the crowd sizes on the four main islands throughout the year.
As you can see, it peaks in July and December and drops off dramatically in January before slowly rising again.
Is Hawaii Cheaper in June?
Unfortunately, June isn’t one of the cheapest months to visit Hawaii. You’ll pay more for accommodations than you would if you visited during the shoulder season.
The overall average across the four main islands is $440 a night. The cheapest average is in September when it drops to $373. Of course, this averages the prices of all hotel rooms, even luxury-class resorts. So your actual cost will vary depending on the type of accommodation you select and which island you’re on.
Here’s a look at the average price per night for the four main islands:
Island | June Average Daily Hotel Rate (in USD) |
Maui | $644.48 |
Kauai | $418.44 |
The Big Island | $411.24 |
Oahu | $284.03 |
While these are cheaper than you’d pay in December (when the going rate on Maui is $607), you will use a big chunk of your Hawaiian getaway money on your hotel room.
If you’re trying to save money on your vacation, plan on staying on Oahu. It’s much cheaper than Maui! And if you stay in an upper-midscale hotel instead of a luxury class one, you’ll pay even less. The data shows that these rooms average $158.15.
If you decide that a June trip isn’t in the budget, here are the average costs for accommodations on each major island throughout the year.
