We stay on Kauai’s North Shore in the summer and Kauai’s South Shore in the winter. Why? Because we’re overly cautious. The weather on Kauai in June is warm and tropical, as you should expect of a Hawaiian Island. Even on the wet North Shore, your odds of sunny days and calm oceans are worth betting on in June.
But with great weather comes great responsibility. Take care of your wallet by considering visiting Kauai in the shoulder seasons. June is during the busy summer season, so you can expect higher prices and more visitors. If you don’t have the flexibility to visit outside of the summer, then don’t you worry.
We have data and personal experience to help you understand what to expect when visiting Kauai in June.
Here are some Kauai planning resources for you to jump right into:
– Get a lay of the land using our free Kauai Travel Guide
– June is a great time to visit Kauai’s North Shore – we love staying at the Hanalei Bay Resort or 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay for hotels and Puamana for condos.
– As the weather and ocean conditions are excellent, consider booking a Napali Coast tour in June!
– Where to Stay on Kauai by Area and Season: we give the details on the resort areas and our favorite hotels and vacation rentals.
Erica’s Take on Kauai in June:
When I visit Kauai, I like to go to the North Shore to enjoy Hanalei Bay’s beaches, and I love a luxury resort like 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay.
In June, I can take my kids to a North Shore beach without worrying about ocean conditions. But I will pay more for a room at a luxury hotel (or any hotel, for that matter). Therefore, I prefer a time like May to visit the North Shore and save some money.
While I prefer visiting Kauai during the shoulder seasons, it’s not something to get too hung up on. In our experience, June provides the excellent weather and ocean conditions you expect when visiting Hawaii. As Kauai is the least visited of the Hawaiian Islands, you miss the summer crowds that flock to Maui and Oahu.
While June isn’t my favorite month to visit, it is my favorite month to visit during the peak summer season of June through August.
Is June a Good Time to Go to Kauai?
June is not one of the best times to visit Kauai. It is one of the most crowded and most expensive months to visit the island. On the other hand, if you’re worried about the Garden Isle’s notoriously rainy weather, it may all be worth it.

Reasons to Go to Kauai in June
Excellent Weather: Kauai is lush and beautiful thanks to all the rainfall, but the heaviest rainfall comes from October to March, and June is one of the driest months of the year.
Calmer North Shore Ocean Conditions: You’ll have more luck swimming on the North Shore in June, but you’ll want to start looking out for swells on the South Shore. Of course, this can change from day to day, but as the start of Hawaii’s summer, ocean conditions tend to be milder.
Mid-Range Vacation Rental Rates: Vacation rental prices don’t fluctuate a ton throughout the year, with a range in prices of less than $50 per night, but June ranks 7th for the most expensive months to book a condo. So opt for a vacation rental if you can! Here are a few of our favorites:

Reasons Not to Go to Kauai in June
Highest Hotel Rates: Hotels hit their peak in June, even beating out December by a few dollars per night. Unlike vacation rentals, hotel rates can vary by up to $150 per night throughout the year, so if you want to save money, opt for October.
2nd Most Crowded Month: Yep, just behind July, June gets the most visitors compared to the rest of the year. Those beaches will be crowded, you’ll need to make reservations early, and you’ll probably play some musical parking spots.
Is Kauai in June Nice: Weather Data
June is one of the early months in Hawaii’s summer season and is pretty dry for Kauai’s notoriously rainy weather. It is beautiful in June, but that’s not saying much for a Hawaiian island, so let’s dig into what that actually means.

Is Kauai in June Rainy?
Kauai gets the most rain over the winter. As you can see from the chart below, it gets the heaviest downpours in December and March, with the whole winter season from October through March getting more rain than the summer season.

In June, you can expect 2 and 4 inches of rain on the south and north sides of the island, respectively. Kauai gets the most rain among the four major islands, so you may still get a drizzle any time of the year, but you can expect it to be short and warm.
Speaking of sides of the island, there is a reason we talk about the north and south shores as being so different: tradewinds. Tradewinds come from the northeast, bringing rain to that area of the island first – the windward side – much of it dissipates as it passes over land and gets blocked by mountains and volcanoes, leaving the southwest side of the island drier – the leeward side. The most popular resort areas on the island are on the leeward sides, for Kauai this is Poipu and Koloa.
How Warm Is It on Kauai in June?
June is not the hottest month on Kauai, but you will get temperatures around 80 degrees during the day for a really comfortable tropical vacation. If temperature is a big consideration for you, the chart below can help you find a suitable time to visit Kauai.

Can You Swim in Kauai in June?
You can swim around Kauai in June, and quite comfortably at that! We’ll dig into ocean conditions in the next section, but we have some great resources for our Kauai beach bums out there:

The 7 Best Kid-Friendly Beaches on Kauai
Kauai has the best snorkeling in May compared to the other islands, but you’ll still have a fantastic time sea turtle spotting in June. Check out Kauai’s best snorkeling spots, as well as the best snorkeling tours around the island.
What Are the Ocean Conditions Like in June?
Kauai is known for very rough waters on the North Shore during the winter, and waters can get rough around the South Shore in the summer. In June, you’ll want to start looking out for swells on the South Shore, but you still have a good chance of calm conditions. It is a good time to check out any of the best beaches on Kauai, not just the ones with the caveats listed above.
No matter the time of year, always check ocean conditions and lifeguard flags (if present) before entering the water. At the risk of sounding like a broken record: if in doubt, don’t go out.
Lucky you, you’ll never need a wetsuit in Hawaii because the ocean temperatures hang out between 76 and 81 degrees (F) all year. In June, you’ll be splashing in waves that are just shy of 80 degrees (F).

When is Hawaii Hurricane Season?
Hurricane season is from June through November, so you’ll be visiting right at the start of the season.
Before you cancel your flight, let me put your mind at ease about hurricanes in Hawaii. If you’re from Florida, I know you’re not concerned; this is for everyone else. Hurricanes rarely make landfall in Hawaii, and even when they do, they seldom cause much damage.
There have only been two hurricanes on record that have made landfall in Hawaii, Hurricane Dot (1959) and Hurricane Inikki (1992), which both did make landfall on Kauai. The last three hurricanes that have caused damage in Hawaii are: Hurricane Lane (2018), Hurricane Iniki (1992), and Hurricane Iwa (1982). The majority of the damage from Hurricane Inkiki was on Kauai.
In case you’re wondering, yes, we love the Koloa Landing Resort and have a full review for you! Now, back to Kauai in June…
Is June a Good Time to Visit the Napali Coast?
June is a great time to visit the Napali Coast! In fact, you can even take a catamaran or hop on a raft from Hanalei to see this famous coastline from the North Shore. Boat tours from Hanalei only run from March to October due to harsh winter ocean conditions on the north side.
Even if you don’t plan to head up north, there are a bunch of great boat tours of the Napali Coast leaving from the south shore.

Other ways to experience the Napali Coast are via a helicopter tour, an airplane tour, or hiking the Kalalau Trail. The trail is an 11-mile one-way hike (22 miles total) that requires camping and a few permits. The shorter hike to the waterfall is also treacherous and is only recommended for experienced hikers. Please be careful when hiking the Napali Coast.
How Busy is Kauai in June?
Kauai in June is the second busiest month to visit. If you love meeting other travelers, this is your time to shine. If that’s not your idea of a relaxing vacation, you may want to consider visiting during the shoulder season.

Source: Hawaii Tourism Authority
Kauai is the smallest of the 4 main islands, but Oahu is only slightly bigger and usually sees 4x as many visitors. In 2024, Kauai saw 130,923 visitors in June, while Oahu welcomed 532,915 visitors. To be fair, Oahu’s infrastructure is equipped to handle those big numbers, but on Kauai, no building is taller than a coconut tree…
Focusing on Kauai’s norms, the busiest month is July, with 135,846 visitors in 2024, and the slowest month is September, with 100,262 visitors in 2024. It’s almost as busy as it gets on Kauai, and you’ll notice it at the beaches and when making reservations for restaurants and tours.
Is Kauai Cheaper in June?
Kauai is not cheaper in June! It is the most expensive month to book a hotel, but vacation rental rates might surprise you.

Source: Hawaii Tourism Authority
You’ll find that hotel and vacation rental rates are pretty far off in June, and it’s not the worst time to book a condo. So, if you want to save money on accommodations, browse vacation rentals in our Where to Stay Directory.
We focus on accommodation rates as that will eat up the biggest chunk of your vacation fund. Pricing for flights tends to follow a similar pattern to hotels but can be a bit more volatile than hotel rates, especially when considering different departure locations.
According to Skyscanner (in March 2025), June is the most expensive month to fly to Kauai from Los Angeles, but March is the most expensive month to fly from San Francisco, and July is the most expensive month to fly from Chicago. We’ll never leave you hanging, though, so make sure you read up on How to Get a Cheap Ticket to Hawaii.
