Knee Deep by Zac Brown Band came across Spotify when I took a break from the Hawaii Vacation Guide playlist. The line “only worry in the world is the tide gonna reach my chair” made me think. What are the calmest beaches in Hawaii?
Where can you park your bum in a beach chair to brave this bother in Hawaii?
The Pacific Ocean is mighty. While our 24 Best Beaches in Hawaii are excellent for swimming and playing in the waves, the scenario of the tide touching your toes is hard to come by.
Head to a local snorkel store to rent a Tommy Bahama Beach Chair, purchase a six-pack of Talk Story from Kohola Brewery, and head to one of these relaxing beaches in Hawaii.

Calmest Beaches in Hawaii By Island
Here are the beaches where surfing documentaries are not filmed.
While these beaches have been picked for small to non-existent waves, protected coves, and no shorebreak, the Pacific Ocean is unpredictable. Weather, currents, and conditions can change fast.
Check Hawaii Beach Safety for current conditions before you go to the calmest beaches in Hawaii.

My criteria are stringent for this list of the calmest Hawaiian beaches. I want you to be able to relax in Hawaii fully. Here is my criteria for choosing these calm beaches.
- No shorebreak or waves.
- You can expect the water to lick your toes, not get you wet.
- It is a sandy beach, suitable for a beach chair.
- These Hawaii beaches are suitable for beginner swimmers and for practicing snorkeling.
- The beach is calm, not just the water. You can expect little to no crowds.
- These beaches are a good option for those with disabilities. See our Guide to Hawaii Handicap Trip Planning.
Pro Tip: All beaches in Hawaii are public. Although some of these are located in front of resorts, this does not mean they are private.

Calmest Beaches on Oahu
- Kahala Beach on Oahu is opposite the Kahala Hotel and Spa. This beach feels private, so enjoy the solitude.

2. Lanikai Beach is windward Oahu’s famous beach for the view of the Mokes, kayaking to the Mokes, and the white sand. Residents are making parking here challenging to non-existent, so the page will be even more secluded (exclusive) once you arrive.

3. Kuhio Beach is the most kid-friendly beach on Waikiki Beach. Located on the Diamond Head side of the Duke Kahanamoku Statue, Kuhio Beach has jetties and break walls to dampen the waves. It may get busy on the weekends, but it has fewer people than the other parts of Waikiki Beach.

4. Hanauma Bay is a nature preserve that requires a reservation to enter. The County of Honolulu limits the number of visitors. The beach is a famous spot for snorkeling.

Calmest Beaches on Maui
- Olowalu Beach on Maui has the epic Olowalu reef offshore. I recommend booking a local kayaking tour to fully experience this beach and reef. Located off the road on the way to Kaanapali in West Maui, this is a beach most people drive right past. I know the sand doesn’t look great in the picture below, but this is a great beach and one of the calmest beaches in Hawaii.

2. Baby Beach Lahaina would be our first pick, as this is how we spent our weekends when we lived on Maui, but the fires have put beach access on hold. As they rebuild the neighborhood, check to see if residents and visitors are welcome here.

3. Makena Cove (Secret Beach) is in Wailea, South Maui. The cove is famous for engagements, weddings, sunsets, and whale watching. Now it is famous as a calm beach in Hawaii for relaxing.

Calmest Beaches on Kauai
A big caveat on these calm beaches in Hawaii, Kauai edition! Kauai has rougher surf and stronger currents than the other Hawaiian islands, especially on the north shore in the winter.
Please check the conditions before visiting these “calm” beaches.
- Baby Beach Poipu is located near the Poipu roundabout, in a residential neighborhood. Respectfully park on the street, and enjoy this beach that is full of local kids playing. It is close to Koloa Landing Resort, our favorite kid-friendly resort on Kauai.

2. Anini Beach on Kaua’i is one of our favorites for the reef. The trick is to drive 100 yards past the county park area, around the bend in the road. That is where you can find a calm part of the beach.

3. Poipu Beach is on Kauai’s South Shore. The beach is surrounded by a reef and even a small island where the crescent bays come together. While this beach is famous for sea turtles on the beach at sunset, it is also famous for parking your bum in a beach chair. Head to the south side, near the breakwall for the calmest section of the beach.

4. Puu Poa Beach on Kauai’s North Shore is at the tip of Hanalei Bay and is in front of 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay and Hanalei Bay Resort. This is a secluded beach with calm waters thanks to the reef out front. But, beware of this beach during the winter!

Calmest Beaches on the Big Island (Hawai’i)
- Keiki Beach, Queen’s Bath in Kailua-Kona, is a baby beach. Park at the Kona Community Aquatic Center and walk across the field for the public access path. Kids can play in the shallow, protected cove and enjoy the tidepools nearby.

2. Kikaua Point Park is one of our favorite beaches in all of Hawaii. However, the beach is part of a luxury resort community, so public parking is limited. Stop at the gatehouse to get a parking pass, and do this before 9 AM. Once you arrive, enjoy the showers, toilet facilities, and a perfect cove on an untamed coastline. This is my place for a beach chair.

3. Kamakahonu Beach is in front of the Marriott Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel and in downtown Kailua-Kona. The location is fantastic but it can get crowded. But, I love this cove and the calm water so it has made my list! Try to avoid this beach on cruise days, as the tender port is next to this beach.

Which Hawaiian Island has the Calmest Waves?
Oahu is the Hawaiian Island with the calmest waves and most relaxing beaches. This is a loaded question, though, as ocean conditions can change quickly at any beach in Hawaii.

- Lanikai Beach (click for directions)
- Kuhio Beach in Waikiki (click for directions)
- Hanauma Bay Nature Reserve (click for directions)
Not all beaches on Oahu have calm waves, but you can find the most protected coves and beaches on Oahu, compared to the other Hawaiian islands.
Sandy Beach on the East Side and North Shore beaches in the winter are excellent examples of Oahu beaches with deadly waves. Always check ocean conditions on Oahu beaches, and talk to the lifeguards before you head out.
If in doubt, don’t go out!
