What is the best island for a Hawaii romantic vacation?
Honestly, there is something romantic about each of the islands and there is no one singular most romantic island. But there are key differences between them that will make your trip just a little different.
We usually think of Maui as the best generally romantic island, thanks to its excellent resorts, plentiful fine dining, and the only adults-only resort on the island. But there are other options to consider to find the right romantic island for you:
- Kauai is the best for a secluded getaway, especially upon its rugged north shore
- Oahu is best for a more cosmopolitan trip with historic sights, museums, and plenty of nightlife
- The Big Island is the winner for an adventurous romantic escape where you can hike in Volcanoes National Park, snorkel with Manta Rays, and stargaze atop Mauna Kea
- Lana’i is the best option for a wellness-themed romantic vacation at the Sensei Lana’i

What are the most romantic resorts in Hawaii?
Hawaii is home to some very nice, very luxurious resorts. You don’t have to stay in a 5-star resort to have a 5-star romantic vacation, but if romance = luxury for you, we have some excellent suggestions:
- Maui: head to the only true adults-only hotel on the island, Hotel Wailea
- Oahu: the Halekulani is a true gem, right in Waikiki but it feels very secluded
- Big Island: this small inn in the hills is a luxurious escape
- Kauai: 1 Hotel Hanalei just opened and offers a sweetheart getaway. See our 7 Best Kauai Honeymoon Resorts for more ideas.

What are the most romantic restaurants on each island?
- Maui: Mama’s Fish House is our go-to, but reservations can be hard to come by. We also really enjoy The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea. Plus we have a list of 10 beachfront and private dining options to consider.
- Oahu: We love the Halekulani Hotel so we can’t help but recommend the House Without a Key for sunset pupus or a full dinner. Views of Diamond Head make this spectacular.
- Kauai: The Beach House is such a special spot, especially for sunset views. Book a table inside or eat lounge-style on the lawn. Live music gives this place a great vibe.
- Big Island: Mauna Lani might be our favorite hotel on the island and its restaurant, The Canoe House, doesn’t disappoint.
And if you’re looking for a reliable, fantastic, and romantic restaurant that has a location on each island, look no further than Merriman’s.
The best activities for your Hawaii romantic vacation
Sometimes just hanging out on the beach and walking hand in hand is enough for your trip. But if you’re looking for a little something extra, we have activities that wow.
If cruising around at sunset with a drink in your hand sounds like your perfect romantic night out, check out our list of the best sunset sails. And if you want to start your stay with an airport lei greeting, we have recommendations.
- Maui: BYOB and head to a farm tour and gourmet lunch. We did this with our toddler but I think it would be even better as a date. We have a list of 9 other romantic activities for the island.
- Oahu: Head to the North Shore for a beach trail horseback ride
- Kauai: 80% of Kauai is inaccessible by foot or car, so take to the skies for a unique view with a helicopter or airplane ride.
- Big Island: See the stars with this Mauna Kea Summit stargazing tour. If you’d rather stay at sea level with your astronomy adventures, this stargazing experience is a great one.
