If you’re planning a luxury trip to Maui, you’ve likely narrowed it down to two iconic resort areas: Wailea on the sunny south shore and Kapalua on the dramatic northwest coast.
Both offer four and five-star resorts, stunning beaches, championship golf, and postcard sunsets. But they feel completely different once you arrive.
One is polished, sunny, and walkable.
The other is secluded, lush, and wild.
So which one is right for your Maui vacation?
In this guide, we’ll break down the real differences between Wailea and Kapalua — from beaches and weather to price, vibe, and who each area is best for.

Quick Overview: Wailea vs Kapalua at a Glance
We like to pretend that the big decision is Wailea vs Ka’anapali for the best resort area on Maui. But the more accurate comparison is Wailea vs Kapalua.
Kapalua has luxury resorts that rival Wailea’s Four Seasons, Grand Wailea, and Wailea Beach Resort. If anything, Kapalua is more exclusive, as you have two choices for resorts: Ritz-Carlton Kapalua Bay and Montage Kapalua Bay.
Jordan’s Take on Wailea vs Kapalua
Erica and I stay in Kapalua when we want to splurge on Maui. Kapalua is quieter and greener, providing a more relaxing Maui vacation. The Ritz-Carlton and the Montage are still large resorts, but they aren’t in a large resort area like Wailea.
We stay in Wailea when we still want luxury but prefer better pools for the kids, plan to walk the Wailea boardwalk to restaurants and shops, and want better beaches.

Kapalua is best visited in the summer. It is still popular in the winter, but expect rougher ocean conditions and more rain. Storms from the windward side wrap around northwest Maui, creating swells and strong currents in the bays. The rain brings rainbows and feeds the jungles surrounding Kapalau. Helping to green the golf courses over Kapalua!
Here is our easy comparison table on Wailea vs Kapalua on Maui. It is a great comparison of the South Maui vs West Maui resorts debate.
Wailea vs Kapalua Table
| Category | Wailea | Kapalua |
|---|---|---|
| Location | South Maui | Northwest Maui |
| Weather | Drier, sunnier | Lusher, more rain |
| Vibe | Upscale & polished | Secluded & natural |
| Best For | Easy luxury | Quiet luxury |
| Beaches | Long sandy stretches (Ulua, Wailea, Polo Beaches) | Dramatic coves (Kapalua, Namalu Bay, Oneloa Beach, DT Fleming Beach) |
| Walkability | Walkable, hotel shuttles available | Spread out / car needed but resorts have shuttles |

Location & Weather Differences
In my opinion, this is the biggest factor in deciding where to stay on Maui: Wailea weather vs Kapalua weather.
There are rainfall differences in the Maui resort areas. South Maui and West Maui resorts don’t differ much in rainfall. But Kapalua is located further north on West Maui, so it gets more rain from the West Maui Mountains.

Our son went to Maui Prep in Napili for preschool. On the drive from Lahaina to Napili, we would hit a brief rain shower every day as we left Ka’anapali. It was more like a mist blowing off the mountains, but it was reliable.
Napili and Kapalua get more frequent showers than Wailea. We don’t mind these quick downpours as they are warm rains and hardly ever impact a pool or beach day. But for some folks, they may not want to worry about rain during their Maui vacation. Especially during the winter season on Maui.
Wailea vs Kapalua Location: in a nutshell
Kapalua is best for a quiet, resort vacation because it is farther from major Maui sights like the Road to Hana and Haleakala. You feel more cut off from Maui, being in the far northwest.
Wailea is still excellent for a beach vacation, and it is closer to things to do on Maui.

Wailea (South Maui)
- Located in South Maui near Kihei
- One of the driest, sunniest areas on the island
- Reliable beach weather year-round
- Expect swells in the summer, but usually not bad for swimming. Check flags and conditions before you head out.
- Easy access to:
- Kihei dining
- Road to Hana (via Kahului)
- Upcountry & Haleakala

Kapalua (Northwest Maui)
- Located north of Kaanapali and Lahaina
- Greener and more tropical landscape
- More rainfall (especially in winter)
- Slightly cooler temperatures
- More wind exposure at times
- Ocean conditions: larger swells and stronger currents in the winter

Driving Guide on Wailea vs Kapalua
Kapalua, on the Maui map, looks like a quick drive from Kahului Airport in north-central Maui. But the Kahekili Highway, which runs along the northwest side of the island, is very dangerous and not recommended. Really, it isn’t even a scenic drive due to one-lane bridges, cliffs, and local residents who don’t want folks driving here.
Therefore, Google Maps will take you south along Honoapiilani Highway, through the Central Valley, and up past Lahaina and Ka’anapali. Click here for directions from Kahului Airport to Kapalua.
Traffic can be an issue for both Maui resort areas. You may experience rush hour traffic as you drive past Kihei on the way to Wailea. On the drive to Kapalua, the Honoapiilani Highway can get backedup along the Lahaina Pali.
We recommend making these drives outside of rush hour times (6 am to 9 am and 3 pm to 5 pm, roughly).
See our Driving with Aloha on Maui for information.

The Vibe: Polished Luxury vs Secluded Escape
Both Wailea and Kapalua are known for having the best golf courses on Maui and the best beaches, but what does it feel like to stay in these Maui resort areas?
Wailea Vibe
- Manicured landscaping
- Great for walking and running on the Wailea boardwalk and sidewalks along the main resort road.
- Upscale shopping at The Shops at Wailea
- Active but refined atmosphere
- Popular with honeymooners and families
Kapalua Vibe
- Quiet and residential feeling
- Fewer crowds
- Dramatic coastal scenery
- More “Hawaii from 20 years ago” feel
- Popular with couples seeking privacy
What is the vibe you want for your Maui vacation?

Kapalua vs Wailea Beaches
While I fret about rain, you may be focused on figuring out where the best beaches are in the two resort areas.
For a beach vacation to Maui, you can’t beat the ease of Wailea beaches. Wailea hotels are located directly on the beaches. Enjoy time at the pool and then run out into the Pacific for a quick dip or play in the surf.
Kapalua Beaches are arguably more beautiful, but the resorts are located a bit above the beaches.
The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua Bay has a paved path down to D.T. Fleming Beach, and they provide golf cart rides. D.T. Fleming Beach can get a rough shorebreak, making it popular with bodysurfers. But, not great for kids.
The Montage Kapalua Bay is a 2-minute walk to Kapalua Bay, but Kapalua gets crowded due to its popularity with locals and visitors.
Here is a full list of beaches in Wailea and Kapalua. Click the links to learn more about the beaches.
Wailea Beaches
- Makapu Beach
- Ulua Beach
- Wailea Beach
- Polo Beach
- Makena Beach (Big Beach) is just south of Wailea
- Great for swimming & snorkeling in calm conditions
- Connected by a scenic coastal path
- Swim with sea turtles in the rocky coves and along the sides of the bays

Kapalua Beaches
- Kapalua Bay
- DT Fleming Beach
- Oneloa Bay
- Napili Bay
- Ritz-Carlton Kapalua Bay is about 0.25 miles above D.T. Fleming Beach
- Montage Kapalua Bay is a 2-minute walk to Kapalua Bay
- Napili and Kapalua are great for swimming with sea turtles
- Honolua Bay is a short drive away, one of the best snorkel destinations on Maui
- Connected by the Kapalua Coastal Trail (one of our 3 Easy Maui Hikes!)
- Larger winter swells and strong currents

One of our favorite activities in Kapalua is spending the day at D.T. Fleming Beach and having lunch, milkshakes, and beers at the Burger Shack. The patio-only restaurant sits right on the beach, making for a classic Maui experience.

Resorts & Accommodations
Wailea vs. Kapalua is also about the resorts: both are luxury, have similar price points, and both offer great service. Let’s go over a brief summary of the Maui resorts in these two resort areas.
Where to Stay in Maui Luxury Guide Video

Wailea Resorts
Below is a list of Wailea resorts from north to south. Click the links to learn more about each resort.
We find the Andaz Maui (Hyatt Resort) great for couples, as the multi-level pool and nightly entertainment create a fun vibe. All these luxury hotels are great for couples, but we find the Wailea Beach Resort and Grand Wailea to be best for kids, thanks to their epic pools.
We love staying in Wailea for the resorts. The rooms, the views, the activities, and the food are top-notch. I mean, they filmed the original White Lotus at the Four Seasons Maui, so you know Wailea means luxury.
- Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort
- Wailea Beach Resort
- Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort
- Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea
- Fairmont Kea Lani
Traits of these Wailea Resorts:
- Larger properties, expansive green space, and lots of rooms
- More dining options on-site
- More resort-style amenities
- Higher average nightly cost

Kapalua Resorts
The Montage Kapalua Bay has residences (suites). You can choose from one-bedroom to four-bedroom residences. You can expect higher prices at The Montage as the rooms are larger.
The Montage recently underwent a major renovation, during which it refreshed its rooms.

The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua has standard rooms and suites.
Both Kapalua resorts have large pools. The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua’s pool is best for kids, as it has a shallow splash area and a small waterslide.
Traits of staying in Kapalua:
- Smaller feel
- More private atmosphere
- Villas and residential-style stays are common
- Fewer total resort choices in Kapalua

Vacation Rentals: Wailea vs Kapalua
In the Wailea vs Kapalua debate, we side with Kapalua for vacation rentals. We find the Kapalua condos on Vrbo and Airbnb are in great condition and conveniently located near Kapalua Beach. You won’t find much in Kapalua, but what is available is high-mid to luxury.
Wailea does have some great rentals, and they have far more than Kapalua. Our favorite is Wailea Ekahi Village, as it is on Keawakapu Beach and offers a great price. Next door is Wailea Elua Village, a favorite for many readers of The Hawaii Vacation Guide.

Below are some of our favorite vacation rental complexes in Wailea and Kapalua.

Dining & Things to Do Nearby
Wailea wins for dining and nearby activities.
Wailea is a large resort area next to the town of Kihei. Therefore, you have many dining options that are a short walk from your resort or a short taxi, Uber, or drive away.
In Kihei, you have food trucks and mom-and-pop restaurants for great, local food. Wailea has budget options, too, but you’ll mostly find upscale dining at the resorts and shopping centers.
Our favorite Maui snorkel tour departs from Wailea! Technically, just south of Wailea on Maluaka Beach. The Kai Kanani Molokini and Turtle Town snorkel tours should not be missed!
Kapalua has a handful of restaurants in the resort area. Your main options are to eat at the Ritz-Carlton or the Montage. Napili is 5 minutes away, with a grocery store and counter-service restaurants in the Napili Gateway shopping center.
The big bonus for Kapalua is that Ka’anapali is just 15 minutes down the road. In Ka’anapali, you will find Kaanapali Beach, snorkeling tours that depart from the beach, sunset cruises, and more things to do in Kaanapali.

Here are your lists of things to do in Wailea vs Kapalua:
- Things to Do in Napili and Kapalua
- Things to Do in Wailea
- Can’t Miss Maui Activities: Last-Minute Trip to Maui
- Maui Tours! Our favorite tours with discounts and direct bookings

Wailea
- More dining density
- Close to Kihei restaurants
- The Shops at Wailea has restaurants, shopping, and activities, like a free hula show
- Easier access to central Maui

Kapalua
- Fewer restaurant options within walking distance
- Walk to Sensei Seafood, Pour House (Italian), Taverna, and Honolua General Store from the Ritz-Carlton
- Closer to:
- Honolua Bay snorkeling
- West Maui hikes
- Feels more remote

Luaus: Wailea vs Kapalua
There are great luaus in both locations! Consider booking a luau for your trip to Wailea or Kapalua.
The Ritz-Carlton Maui is home to the Tales of the Kapa Moe Luau (standard and premium seating). You can also drive to Kaanapali for the Sheraton Maui Luau.
Wailea is home to numerous luaus at the resorts. Our favorite is the luau at the Wailea Beach Resort. We like this one for its beach sunset location and the great food.
We share all of our favorite Maui Luaus here. The other Wailea luaus are in that article.

Golf Comparison
Wailea and Kapalua are both golf destinations. I would call them two of the best in all of Hawaii.
- Wailea Golf Club (3 courses) has the Blue, Gold, and Emerald Courses
- Kapalua Golf – The Plantation Course (PGA Tournament of Champions host in years past) and The Bay Course
Many golfers come to Maui specifically to play The Plantation Course. The course is on the side of the West Maui Mountains with epic coastline views. The course is a couple of minutes down the road from Kapalua.
It is a prestigious course thanks to the PGA kicking off its season here in years past. Recently, the tournament was canceled due to water issues. It was too brown to air on TV and to play.
Kaanapali is also 15 minutes down the road and has two courses, one of which is oceanfront.
Wailea has three courses with great ocean views. These are a short drive from the resorts.
Note: Most of the luxury resorts provide shuttle service to the golf courses.
Cost Differences: Is One More Expensive?
The average nightly rate on Maui in 2025 was $535 (source: Hawaii Tourism Authority).
Wailea averaged $754 per night, with a peak of $1,059 in December.
Maui doesn’t track Kapalua resort prices as it does for Kaanapali and Wailea, because it is too small. Kapalua’s Montage is about $2,200 a night in July 2025 for a two-bedroom residence. One-bedroom residences are available.
The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua averages $800 a night in July 2025 for a standard room.
With a large selection of vacation rentals, you can find the best deals on a condo in Wailea.
Both Maui resort areas require a rental car to best get around the island.

Who Should Stay in Wailea?
Wailea is ideal for the following Maui visitors:
- First-time Maui visitors
- Families
- Travelers wanting a better chance of sunshine
- Those who love walkability
- People who want luxury without isolation
Who Should Stay in Kapalua?
Kapalua is ideal for the following Maui visitors:
- Couples – anniversaries and honeymooners!
- Repeat Maui visitors
- Quieter, nature-focused travelers
- Golfers
- Travelers who don’t mind driving more

Final Verdict: Wailea or Kapalua?
If you want:
- Sunshine + convenience → Choose Wailea
- Privacy + scenery → Choose Kapalua
