Welcome to the busiest and most expensive time to visit Hawaii! That doesn’t mean you should skip the Hawaiian Islands. Here is your Hawaii Summer Vacation Guide so you know what to expect. And, help you make those reservations and save some money.
No fluff, just the facts, data, and our experience traveling to Hawaii in the summer.
We share a summer vacation budget, the can’t-miss activities for each island, and whether booking a Hawaii summer vacation package is worth it.
Hawaii Summer Vacation 2026 Update
UHERO’s travel forecast predicts tourism will be down 5.5% by the summer of 2026. The state of Hawaii is edging into a mild recession due to the drop in visitor numbers. But visitors should not expect to pay less for an island vacation this summer.
Hotels will protect high rates. Airlines will manage capacity. And restaurants will continue to raise prices as their own costs keep rising. Be optimistic! Look for last-minute price drops on hotels and rental cars. Plus, you may find open tables at popular restaurants, like Mama’s Fish House and Merriman’s. Middle-tier hotels are taking the biggest hit, expect price drops here, while luxury hotels are forecasted to increase in price.
Why Take a Hawaii Summer Vacation?
Why take a Hawaii summer vacation? Because the kids are out of school, and you want a phenomenal summer vacation.
Here is why you should take a Hawaii summer vacation:
- You’ll find the best weather in the summer. Enjoy a higher probability of sunny days and a lower chance of rain in the dry season. We enjoy visiting Hawaii in the winter, too.
- Ocean conditions are the calmest during the summer. You don’t have to worry about north shore swells. South shore swells are possible (not as large as notorious north shore big wave surfing), so always check ocean conditions.
- Hawaii is lively in the summer, with active restaurants and no shortage of live music.
- You’ll find excellent conditions for snorkeling from shore or on a tour. Expect high visibility and plenty of marine life – Hawaiian spinner dolphins, manta rays, and Hawaiian green sea turtles.
- Embrace a memorable and unique family vacation.

There are two drawbacks to visiting Hawaii in the summer.
June and July are the busiest months in Hawaii. You will find crowds in the major resort areas (Waikiki, Ka’anapali, Waikoloa), more traffic, and it will be a bit harder to get reservations at restaurants and tours.

The second drawback is the cost. Supply-and-demand pricing means you’ll find higher hotel and car rental rates in the summer. We share ways to save below!
The crowds aren’t that bad. We take Hawaii summer vacations for the great weather, and it is when we can get away. Plus, Hawaii is full of hidden gems and quiet beaches.

We share genuine experiences—from snorkeling spots to hikes—and connect travelers with authentic Hawaiian culture and ʻāina (land). Our mission is simple: make your Hawaiian adventure both seamless and meaningful.

Best Islands for a Hawaii Summer Vacation
Deciding which Hawaiian island to visit will be your toughest decision. Here are some island tips for your Hawaii summer vacation.
Click the island name for our free island travel guide to learn more.
- Maui – best balance of beaches, activities, resorts. Lanai is a ferry ride away.
- Oahu – city + beach + attractions. Bucket list items like Pearl Harbor and the Polynesian Cultural Center.
- Kauai – nature, hiking, relaxed vibe, perfect for a honeymoon or anniversary.
- Big Island – volcanoes and adventure
- Cruise – Visit multiple islands or all four islands with the weekly departure of the Pride of America by NCL.
We have a fun quiz for you to try: Quiz: Which Hawaiian Island Should I Visit?
Pro Tip! We recommend visiting one or two islands on an 8 to 10-day trip. Doing too many island hops means you’re spending your summer vacation transferring hotels and sitting in airports.
The average stay in Hawaii is 8.2 days (Source: HTA). If you plan to stay longer, you can island-hop more. See our Hawaii Island Hopping Guide.
The best islands for a Hawaii summer vacation are Maui and Kauai. Those are our two favorites to visit during the summer because of the great ocean conditions at all the beaches, fewer crowds, and great resorts for soaking up the summer fun.

Hawaii Summer Vacation Weather
The weather is great in the summer, but what does that mean?
The second time we moved to Hawaii, we were coming from England. We had enough of the dark, cold, wet weather, and we craved the tropical days we enjoyed while living on Oahu. We moved to Maui in late August. It was hot!
We thought we made a mistake on this big move to Maui. But we realized it was our sensitivity to the warmth. It rarely gets into the high 80s on the islands. Humidity isn’t that bad either, as resorts are on the dry side of the island.

Will it rain on my Hawaii summer vacation?
Hawaii has two seasons: summer and winter. Summer in Hawaii is from May to October. Winter is considered the wet season.
You will still find rain in Hawaii in the summer, but mainly on the windward side of the islands (e.g., Road to Hana on Maui or Hilo on the Big Island).
Resorts and vacation rentals are located on the leeward (dry side) of the islands. The rainfall graph below shows average rainfall in popular leeward locations.

What are the ocean conditions in the summer?
You will find the calmest ocean conditions during the summer in Hawaii.
Large storms in the Bering Sea, offshore Alaska, generate large swells and strong currents that reach Hawaii during the winter. Summer storms from the South Pacific are not as strong. Hence, beaches are more swimmable during the summer months all around the islands.
You may still find swells and strong currents on south-facing beaches, like Poipu on Kauai or Wailea on Maui.

Summer Ocean Safety
The Pacific Ocean is always dangerous. Check ocean conditions before you head out. We always check ocean conditions at lifeguard beaches here: Hawaii Beach Safety.
- Always swim with a buddy
- Abide by lifeguard flags
- Never turn your back on the ocean
- If in doubt, don’t go out
What to Pack for Your Hawaii Summer Vacation
We are all about coming to Hawaii with a carry-on and a backpack. With the warm, tropical weather in Hawaii, we enjoy wearing shorts and t-shirts as we explore the islands. A little resort wear and a gorgeous outfit for a luau is all the fancy you need.
Pro Tip! Bring layers, even in summer, for high-elevation areas.
If you plan to visit high-elevation areas, such as Haleakala National Park or Volcanoes National Park, we recommend bringing warm clothes. Wear your airplane clothes (long pants and a sweater) plus a light jacket.
For a full packing list and printable checklist, see our “What to Pack for Hawaii” page.

Hawaii Summer Vacation Packages
This is the most common search term for planning a Hawaii summer vacation. Expedia, Kayak, TripAdvisor, and Costco are there to advertise the benefits of summer vacation packages. The advertisements seem to work!
14 percent of domestic visitors to Hawaii booked a package trip last year (Source: Hawaii Tourism Authority).
Unlike Costco, I am not here to sell you a summer vacation package. Here are things to consider when you go down the rabbit hole of price shopping. Consider this your pros-and-cons list based on our research.
What to know about Hawaii summer vacation packages:
- Costco Travel Hawaii is by far the most popular place to book a summer vacation package.
- Always understand the cancellation policy. Some have a tiered cancellation timeline, some offer a 0% refund, and some offer a partial refund. Costco received a lot of negative feedback for its strict cancellation policy during COVID.
- All-inclusive hotels in Hawaii don’t exist! Don’t let the internet fool you. Resorts expect visitors to leave and explore the islands. You may find a vacation package that includes breakfast, but you won’t find an all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink resort package.
- The best deals can be found when you book a hotel, rental car, and airplane ticket.
- Booking a full vacation package (plane + car + hotel) makes it harder to price-shop and reduces your flexibility when making changes.
- Packages make the most sense for couples’ trips to Hawaii. The price per person and hotel options are best for couples. This especially applies to simple vacations: one island and one hotel.
- Packages get complicated when you want to stay at multiple resorts and visit multiple islands.
- For a first-time visitor to Hawaii, you may not understand where you’re staying. If a hotel’s nightly rate is super cheap, be skeptical of the hotel’s quality.
- Cruising in Hawaii may be your best option if you want an all-inclusive package and want to see multiple islands. You will pay a lot for shore excursions, but your hotel and food budget will thank you. See our Hawaii Cruise Itinerary for those days on the islands.
When I recently shopped for a trip to Kauai, I saved about $400 by booking a rental car and a luxury hotel package through Costco Travel for a June trip. I compared the package to booking 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay and the rental car separately, as well as directly with the hotel and Budget Rental Car.
This would be a great vacation package for a couple who island-hopped from Oahu to Kauai for a romantic 4-day getaway.
Jordan’s Take on Summer Vacation Packages
You can save money by buying a summer vacation package, but it gets complicated. When companies make things complicated, I start to smell a rat.
Price comparison shopping is highly complex. You can’t do an apples-to-apples comparison. Not only are hotels, airlines, and rental car companies different, but the package may include perks like a $100 daily resort credit, free 4th night, no resort fee, breakfast included, no cancellation, no prepayment, etc.
Pro Tip! Resort fees are now part of the advertised price per federal law, so the package does not waive resort fees.
You may find the same deals when you book directly. You may find similar deals when you book through a credit card travel portal. You may be paying more because of perks you don’t want.
Erica and I spend a lot of time price shopping packages, checking credit card travel portals, and contacting the hotel or airline directly to get prices.
I’m afraid to say there is no magic bullet. For the best price, you have to check booking individually and compare prices to online travel agents (Costco, Expedia, Priceline, etc.).
We always end up booking our hotel, rental car, and airline tickets individually; we never book a summer vacation package.
I don’t book a summer vacation package for the following reasons.
- We can be flexible by booking without a vacation package. We can easily change our dates and times, usually with no fees.
- We can visit multiple hotels or stay in a vacation rental to save money and splurge at a hotel. We stay in a vacation rental while exploring the island, then spend a couple of nights at a resort on the beach.
- We always save money by checking rates before we depart. The refundable room costs more initially, but we end up saving a lot on last-minute bookings.
- We never know if we actually saved money on the package. I don’t like feeling ripped off.
- We don’t usually like the price and the hotel provided in the package. We know the hotels and areas where we like to stay in Hawaii. It is our job to know the best and worst places.

Hawaii Summer Vacation Itinerary
Most visitors stay for 8 to 9 days. A lot of summer vacations to Hawaii are a bit longer, like two weeks, as folks travel from the East Coast or further.

Tips for Designing Your Itinerary
Here are our favorite tips for designing an itinerary for your Hawaii summer vacation.
- Avoid overloading your days!
- Avoid backtracking when out exploring the island
- Focus on one geographic area per day
- Give yourself beach days! Explore the island one day, and sit poolside the next.
- Avoid doing two tours in one day, as it can be exhausting. We break this rule often (like a Lanai snorkel tour + the Sheraton Maui Luau!), but we still don’t recommend it.
- You don’t have to do many tours. There are a lot of free and low-cost activities, and I’m not talking about hiking.
Hawaii Summer Vacation Costs
Summer is busy, so costs can be higher than the average. There is hope!
The last two years have seen visitor counts stagnate in Hawaii. The one to two percent growth in visitors is due to an increase in tourism to Kauai, but the other islands have all seen a downturn. Especially, Maui after the fires of August 8th, 2023.
Key takeaway on the cost of a Hawaii summer vacation: Expect higher prices in the summer, but you can find deals. A hotel trying to fill rooms, an airline with too many seats open, and you can find last-minute deals.

Flight to Hawaii in the Summer
Flights to Hawaii during the summer, especially from the West Coast, have been affordable for the past few years. You could find flights for well under $700 round-trip.
We are seeing many flights this summer for over $1,000 round-trip, per person. See what deals you can find and book early!
Look for deals on Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines (owned by Alaska), and Southwest. East Coast travelers will have the best luck with United and Delta Airlines.

Hotels and Resort Pricing
I recommend booking your Hawaii summer hotel six to nine months in advance to save money. Resorts rarely have no occupancy, but prices change dramatically with dynamic pricing.
Hawaii has hostels to five-star luxury hotels. We find Hawaii hotels to be modern, high-quality, and worth the price tag. The two and three-star hotels may nickel-and-dime you, so be mentally prepared.
We share average hotel daily rates in the graph below. Maui is the most expensive island due to the luxury resorts in Wailea, South Maui. You can still find deals in Maui, especially in Kihei. See our Kihei vs Kaanapali article to help you decide.

Vacation rentals are a popular place to stay in Hawaii in the summer. For families and large groups, they are a great option. I recommend checking the reviews and pictures for each unit, as they are all different. All the islands have legal vacation rentals on Airbnb and Vrbo.
We share our favorite vacation rentals by island in our Where to Stay directory.

Car Rental Rates
You can expect to pay $30 to $60 a day for a rental car in the summer. Like hotel pricing, rental car pricing is dynamic.
I recommend booking your rental car at the same time as your hotel. Reserve without prepayment to check rates.
We use DHCR on our summer trips to Hawaii. They are a marketplace for the big rental car brands (Avis, Budget, Dollar, Sixt, etc.), and they offer no prepayment! We recheck rates before we fly to Hawaii.
You can also rent from a local company! We share our favorite local car rental companies here.

Food and Dining
Hawaii imports 80% of its food from the mainland, so food is not cheap. Budget for a higher food budget when visiting.
You can expect to pay $30 to $50 for an entree at a medium to fine-dining restaurant.
You will find an abundance of food trucks and small mom-and-pop eateries on the islands. These are a great way to save money and find quality local grindz (food). Food trucks are about $15-$25 per plate.

Summer Tours!
Yes! We recommend doing one or two tours during your Hawaii summer vacation. We love getting out on the water when we’re in Hawaii.
Unfortunately, the humpback whale migration ended in March. You can still see Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins, Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, Manta Rays on the Big Island, and more!
Sunset cruise, dinner cruise, snorkel tours, horseback riding, ATV rides, ziplines, farm tours, and more await you in Hawaii this summer.
