West Maui Areas to Stay
West Maui is near and dear to our hearts, as we used to live in Lahaina. While we stay in both West and South Maui when we visit the island, we favor West Maui for the range of hotels, restaurants, and beaches on this side.
Kaanapali – Best Overall for First-Time Visitors
Ka’anapali Resorts ranks highest as the best area to stay on Maui, thanks to the number of hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals. Oh, and Ka’anapali Beach and the surrounding Lahaina and Ka’anapali beaches can’t be beat.
You will find hotels, vacation rentals, and timeshares lining Kaanapali Beach. Kaanapali Resorts was built in the late 60s as the first major resort area on Maui. The properties have been well-maintained and modernized over the years.
Highlights of staying in Kaanapali:
- Long sandy beaches at Kaanapali Beach and Airport Beach
- Walkable resort area: a boardwalk connects the resorts and Whalers Village Shopping Center
- Large beachfront resorts
- Snorkeling at Black Rock with sea turtles. Safety note: Stay on the front side; strong currents are dangerous in the cove behind the cliff.
- Good dining access
- Balanced location of beaches, restaurants, shops, tours, and other things to do.
- Beachloading Kaanapali snorkel tours
- Kaanapali sunset dinner cruises

Lahaina – Historic & Central
Lahaina is our favorite historic town on Maui. The town is rebuilding after the tragic fires in August 2023. Someday, the historic Royal Capital will be rebuilt. There are few places to stay as the town is rebuilding.
For now, vacation rentals are available on Vrbo and Airbnb. These were spared from the fires.
Consider staying at Puamana or Lahaina Shores in Lahaina.
Tours have started departing from Lahaina Harbor. Check out this Lahaina sunset sail and save 10%! Restaurants are open too! Go to the Lahaina Gateway and Cannery Mall shopping centers for places to eat.

In the West Maui vs. South Maui debate for the best area to stay on Maui, South Maui wins for offering the most luxury and most affordable options.
Wailea is our favorite luxury place to stay on Maui. You will find us here when we want a few days at the beach and at the resort! The pools in Wailea are some of the best in Hawaii.
Let’s get into the details on staying in South Maui.
